Hi all,

My brother-in-law is after a 60" TV - Probably will have to be a Plasma at this size.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Budget is £1500ish

Thanks

For that budget I would suggest going with a smaller screen! even going second hand on a 60 inch screen would cost more than £1,500, unless you want a piece of crap to be honest.

Wow TV's are expensive in the UK.. In the USA $2,500 (equiv of 1500GBP) Will happily get you a decent THX certified Panny 65"

Er no. As previously mentioned LG 60PK590 well within range. In fact quite the opposite is true of the above post - you can't now get much better than this even by spending more now that Pioneeer Kuro's are no longer in production.

I have a Pioneer LX6090 and other than the Pioneer KRP 600 I haven't seen or heard of anything come close to it, never heard of the LG 60PK590 before

Your original advice was to "get a smaller screen unless you want a piece of crap to be honest". The point is that the 60PK590 is so far removed from being a "piece of crap" and coming in at £1400 it fits the OP's requirements. Your advice was, well, unhelpful.

(Not everyone needs or wants a Kuro spec or a Kuro budget.)

Going by this thread over at AVForums, it has lots of issues that would put me right off! So I'll stand by my "piece of crap" comment ;).

People only post when there are problems, and there are always problems regardless. I have a 50PK590 and it's a cracking set for the money. You can always be elitist And recommend the set that costs 2 or 3 times as much however that doesn't make the other product "a piece of crap", specially considering it's price point.

thing is LG are one of the budget brands

They are significantly cheaper than panasonic etc... so the costs have to be made somewhere.

In TVs unless your getting a good deal by buying last years model etc.. you get what you pay for.

And thats precisely what I'm getting at, MrLOL's last comment "you get what you pay for" is spot on! If you buy crap expect crap performance simples.

i wouldnt go so far as to say they are crap

But as an example, i've got experience of the quality control on the samsung sets, which seems very poor. My set was perfect, but when my mate went out to buy the same one (as he was so impressed with mine) he got a later revision (mine was a launch model) and it was woefull. Issues all the over place and samsung UK had no technical staff with which to sort the problem. Samsung Korea were writing firmware updates for the engineers to apply, but nobody at samsung UK knew what they did ! in the end, replacing the mainboard and applying all the firmware updates didnt cure the issue, so they wrote it off and issues him a full refund.

Bought a more expensive sony instead ... perfect first time and even better than my samsung if im honest.

Firm believer that you get what you pay for. But that doesnt automatically mean the cheaper set is going to have crap picture and break in 5 minutes. It just increases the chance of their being a fault / poor service etc..

Thing is i've done this before with mates, who've then promptly ignored me and bought a 42" 1024 x 768 plasma for peanuts and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Every bone in my body was picking faults with it and thinkin how much i'd regret that purchase, but he doesnt care. He will probably only start to care if it breaks. And not all of the lower end TVs like LGs etc.. will break, just a slightly higher margin than other brands, so he will most probably think its amazing and think what the heck was i worrying about telling him to make sure he got a 1920 x 1080 1080P one for his blurays.
