WD raptors or SDD ?

With that budget get an SSD,Ive just got my a 60GB Vertex 2 SSD and its so fast i was shocked seriously,I didn't think they were that fast.

I have OS+A few small apps installed to the SSD and still have 33Gb free.

everything else is stored on my spinning drives.

could i have windows and some programs on SSD and then game and other programs on two, 1tb hard drive in raid 0 ?

what are the average life of a SSD?? and if i raid them will it shorten there life??? i was looking at the gskills but i been told trim is not supported, do i really need trim or is it a gimmick??? i am new to this ssd technology

Why would TRIM be a gimmick? it's designed to maintain SSD performance and it works just fine.

Life expectancy will vary depending on the manufacture and model. Don't see why RAID0 should shorten the life span but do you really need it? You'll would also TRIM pass through. I wouldn't say TRIM is a gimmick at all but many of us early adopters got along just fine before it was implemented. Again depends very much on the particular drive as to whether you would see a significant performance degredation over time. Intel drives for example, exhibited very little performance loss in tests. Having TRIM support does mean that you won't have to periodically erase the drive to restore it to 'factory' condition. Almost all current drives support TRIM however and I'd strongly recommend getting yourself a decent drive. I think you might live to regret saving a little on a cheapo.

On your budget you can pick up a quality smallish drive (Crucial, Intel, OCZ) and have change left over for a good secondary HDD e.g. Samsung F3 500 GB.

Unless you're running a Sandforce based drive, TRIM doesn't seem to return performance on Sandforce drives the same way compared to other controllers. Depending on the data types you are using you may have to erase the drive to return performance.

It's a long thread but interesting.

Whats your usage? OCZ Vertex 2e drives are good if you'll be writing to the drive a lot, the Crucial 300 series would be better for read intentsive tasks - ie gaming.

I dumped a 2x Raptor RAID0 setup for a single SSD and have never looked back. Only sequential writes are now slower but no factor on a boot drive.
