Book reveals The Stig's identity. Top Gear not happy.

given how bad the last top gear was, he might have realized that there might not be that many more top gear shows to go anyway

The last series was pretty awesome, it was consistently the most popular programme on BBC iPlayer too. It draws in the audiences and is the crown jewel in BBC2's er, crown. It's not going anywhere any time soon.

By the sounds of it he was on a pish poor wage, if the book does remotely well he will probably make more money in a few weeks than he did in years of driving for TG

The only way this will end is with Ben being the star in a reasonably priced car and the stig will turn up and sit next to him.

Ben will lose his job over this and it's his loss. I'd rather be the stig and work for top gear than sell a book. Idiot.

at least we know he's just another money grabbing knob :D

i too would rather be the stig, than get a few grand off a book...

now he's worthless

but who's gunna be the new stig?

It's easy to say that from your own seat.

But think about it for a minute, the guy has been involved in cars for years, he races them and owns his own motorsport company.

He got asked to be The Stig after McCarthy, he's ended up continuing that role for years. The three main presenters still get paid an amazing salary, despite working for the BBC, yet he gets a fraction of what they get and can't tell anyone who he really is.

Could you imagine being one of the most famous people in the country, but not being able to tell them? It's a really bizarre situation.

While it might seem like it's the most ultimate job ever, if you are already a car driver and a racer, who is already testing cars, writing about cars and even working as a stunt car driver in major films.... being 'The Stig' is just another gig, it's not going to be the end of the world for the guy.

suppose so but... like you said hes got his own company, so he cant be shy of a few quid.

and imo, the main reason he did it was for more fame + money? as far as i can gather...

im not really botherd, i just hope the next "stig" or whatever new gimick TG come up with learns from this half of the fun was from stig related stuff...

I would have stayed as the Stig and published my autobiography at a much later date.

He isn't going to be penniless (does he get royalties from all the Stig merchandise as technically it's his likeness used?) and he gets to travel all around the world, have fun, be a motoring icon, meet Hollywood stars and generally be well-loved. Lots of fans knew who he was secretly anyway.

He just lost one of the best jobs ever!

Or he lost it first, or he had his own reasons for quitting. I doubt he was under any illusions that he would do this and keep the job

I very much doubt it, as it's not his likeness, it's a guy (any guy) in a white suit, there is no part of him visible, unlike say James May or Clarkson who if their likeness appears on merchandising it is actually their face etc and not just a shiny white helmet...

This is going to sound strange, but I never cared who the stig was.

I knew it'd just be some touring car guy I'd never heard of, some retired formula 1 guy or something. As Jeremy Clarkson said on his introduction .. 'test drivers are particularly boring creatures'. It's true. If it was 'Ben Collins' or 'some bloke who won touring car champion in 1989 and 1990' - who gives a monkeys he's effectively a nobody!

The only thing that would have been marginally interesting for a while is if it was a women, or there was some trick played on the viewer like - er -- the driver was blind and counted into the corners by a spotter. That'd have been cool ...

Havent read the thread so im sorry if this isnt news now but apparently the stig has been sacked now.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/09/08/3005874.htm

pretty sure they sacked him as soon as he "announced" it. thats why they released so much info - to hurt his book sales.

ah well, they will get someone just as good if not better to replace him. plus i cant wait to see what skit the top gear lads do for the new "stig" :D

If they don't go with a new Stig (I think they should just get a new one) I would like to see a guest race driver doing it instead which could change each week.

they would have to scrap the lap times.

thats why there was only one "stig" for the actual laps, and about 7 other stand in's for when they do challenges etc.

but anyway, they will get a new stig (or similar gimick)

Yeah thats what I realised just before I ninja Edited... ;)

i want them to get more pro racers though, allways enjoyed the F1 guys laps.

but there are thousands of talanted drivers out there that would probly be more than happy to do a few laps, so long as they have time
