You can turn auto renewal off on Xbox.com. So people saying you are "tied" in are wrong. Just go to your account settings on xbox.com and set it to off after it has renewed.

Jesus, MS for the first time ever cut xbox live gold by 40% and all people can do is moan, GTFO
Anyone know how to get this deal, never having bought XBL live before? Still using 1 month free trial after buying new xbox, but it only shows 40% 3 month membership in spotlight...
Will it then auto-renew itself every 12 months?

Even if you get charged 39.99 next year, thats one year for 23.99 and one for 39.99,l over 2 years thats cheaper than what you can get currently
The auto re-new is depends completely from your perspective but for me it isn't generally a bad things though I agree it usually cheaper elsewhere than through microsoft themselves. I haven't looked for a while but I am sure you used to be able to change the card details held on the xbox - so if this was (or still is) possible and you changed it to 000000000000 next year it would it try to renew to your original details or your updated ones?
