Codemasters F1 2010 X360/PS3 (contains important question about 2011 game!!!)

My opinion is that they should have incorporated sim handling and arcade (as default) and then allowed the user to dial up the realism as they choose (much like almost all of the popular PC racing sims). The damage model looks very similar to GRID/DiRT 2 in the way things break and deform, which is not a great sign when you consider how differently F1 cars are built. I would like to see the option for a realistic damage model too, no 'bumper cars' as that's just ridiculous in F1. I think the problem is that Codemasters are now too scared to alienate some of their audience by making the handling and damage too realistic. F1 cars are hard to drive, after all. This is a shame, as I really don't think it'd make that much difference to their sales, and a great damage model would cement the game as the best F1 sim/game ever. If you want, add an option for less realistic bumper cars for those who want it. I remember when racing games took time to get used to and damage was punishing. It looks like even going over the grass incurrs little penalty, why are they so scared to make it realistic? Obviously we haven't seen the final build quite yet, but I hope that if not much changes they can build a better simulation come 2011, as the enthusiast community is crying out for one, just look at all the F1 mods out there! Perhaps some of the problem is that it's also (and perhaps primarily) a console game as opposed to PC exclusive, so most gamers prefer a pick up and play style as opposed to a sim.

I'll still get the game (on PC), I loved GRID and DiRT/DiRT 2, but not as sims. I have a feeling the DFGT will stay in it's box in favour of the 360 pad for this one, just as their previous 3/4 games.

EDIT: I realise I'm in the Console section here, just talking about the game in general apart from the last few comments.

There not scared they just don't want it to be realistic I mentioned few pages back davidson even states he dont like sim racing and they want people to play the game for long periods not keep crashing out.

But I do agree with you put in the option so fans of the sim and arcade can have what they want but i dont think they will for atleast a few years if they do.

how sturdy is that wheel stand ? does it look like it will take constant abuse of a g25 and overstear :D might just go rhe whole hog and look into playseat type of thing.;)

Pretty sturdy. Have a look at the vids on YouTube.

The build is solid and because the G25 pedals are heavy and they sit on the base of the stand it holds up well.

I usually have mine at a two seat sofa with the bar in the middle between the two cushions, so that helps a little as well.

However, I too was looking at a Playseat - the only reason I didn't was because I lived in a flat :)

It's also worth pointing out that when I was looking there was talk of some £100 Playseat ripoff - but it wasn't out yet.

Also, this could save you some money AND you wouldn't have the pillar in the middle of your legs: http://www.gtomegaracing.com/purchase.html

This also has potential (apart from the most ANNOYING voice-over in the video that auto starts!) and comes with a wheel as well by the looks of it: http://openwheeler.co.uk/

Surely it can't be hard to make? All you need is some steel, car seat and a welder.

Yeah, just some steel, a car seat and a welder... let me go get that out from under the kitchen sink :)

Watched that night video in 720 last night again, in fact watched it a few times. Have they tightened up the AI with other cars, as in this video the other cars on the track aren't looking to dance around as much. They seem more likely to follow the racing line more rigidly.

It looks REALLY good, I'm also picking this up for my PS3, going to take a drive to the local Tesco early Friday morning and pick it up.. I know, I've got a Steam Pre Order in, but I can play on both PC and PS3 as I'm sure this game will be hugely engrossing for me. I can't wait.

Oh and sub focus - coco mix in the video was awesome. Codemasters do add decent music to their games. dirt 2 had a decent soundtrack, seems F1 is getting the drum n bass treatment... 24th can't get here quick enough.

Have noticed the same. They did say that they had aimed to make the AI much more consistant than in Grid and Dirt - much closer to real life F1. Would be interesting to get a comparison of the game between PS3 and PC. Getting impatient :)

I used them all the time, games usually arrive early. Halo Reach arrived on the Monday. Had no problem with then at all.

p.s. I've made about 15 purchases through them.

Couple of questions guys...

Will anyone be interested in doing Time Trials on the remaining tracks this season? Im looking a bit of fun and curious to see how our times compare to whatever the real race pole positions are.

Ive ordered the Fanatec Clubsport tuning kit and improved shifters but it wont be here for sometime. Any owners of the CSP's already got them by chance?

Yeah have to agree with catchy tunes.
Not sure if your aware but the official F1 website usually does great race highlight videos with nice mixing of music and in race action.

I would. I should be OK around Suzuka but the rest of them will be painful. Will be a laugh anyway.

Depending on how close the tracks are to GP4 (played a lot of hours with that game) I'm pretty handy around sliverstone, monza, monaco and spa. I love those tracks, last time I raced at monza, I took a pole of around 1.22.500 or something, that was with a PS3 pad using a PC copy of GP4 2007 mod. Quite a handy lap. Went on to win that race.

Silverstone is the one track I really want to nail correctly, I always miss the apex luffield leaving me wide into woodcote and messes up my approach to copse as I have to correct down the straight.. Never get it right, can't carry the speed through brooklands... Going into Maggotts, following though to becketts and down to chapel I can keep the speed, 7th gear and to third and I'm off down hanger straight, but then F1 2010 has the new 2010 silverstone layout.. As if I don't struggle enough. .lol

Its the Hermann Tilke tracks I 'll struggle with, simply beacuse I don't know any of them, the classics like Monza / Monaco / Silverstone / Spa / Suzuka etc I'm fine with even with their latest alterations.

Singapore - now there's a circuit I'm going to dread, every damn turn looks the same, very few landmarks to work with, at least in Monaco you know exactly where you are!

So, I shall be bouncing off a few walls but I'll be posting some lap times, hopefully within a few seconds of respectable... :o
