A normal UK winter in the dales, moorlands, peak district, lake district includes some snow, sometimes heavy.
Then there's Scotland, still a part of the UK and some bits get plastered every year (in snow, the residents get plastered all year round).

I got over a foot of snow overnight both last winter and the winter before. (south london)
Guess it depends on where you were then.
lol at people complaining about last winter being EXTREMELY coldDD t shirt and a jacket all i needed.. :/ haven't seen a proper cold winter i bet
Probably the same people that think a whiteout is when there is some snow coming out of the sky.
I was in Finland in October once and it was colder than anything I've known in this country. I'd love to see a Winter over there.
They are already predicting heavy snow this winter, if it happens or not is a different matter.
We don't get much snow and it is pointless having billions of pounds of equipment and supplies to deal with heavy snow like other countries.
Jeez I've not long moved north of Scotland, but the guys here said it was hitting -20 last winter!
It doesn't get that cold in London. Usually about 10-15 degrees colder than now. Rarely below freezing. I wear a thin wool jumper and a windproof/waterproof jacket from Timberland. On a really cold day a wool hat and scarf also, particularly if we're going to the pub. Snow is pretty unusual, cold rain less so.
tbh Winter isn't that bad - I had to go to school during the worst of the snowfall and I was perfectly happy just wearing my suit plus a waterproof coat. The only thing I would say, is bring some wellies or cheap boots of some kind, because I wore my shoes one day, and they got absolutely soaked in salty slush thanks to the ineffective salting of pavements. As a result, the leather got ruined, and my feet were wet all morning 
. My cold weather shopping list would just be warm fleece, wellies, and waterproof jacket. Don't bother with long johns because as soon as you get into work your legs will be on fire and you'll have to take them off.
Don't worry about snow (which rarely seems to fall in significant quantities anyway) - if it's light then just set off an hour early, and if it's heavy all the gritters get stuck anyway so just turn the TV on

I spent 5 winters in uk, southampton and london. The question you need to ask yourself is how well do you cope with central heating. I didn't mind the cold or the rain but it drove me bonkers the central heating in most places. It was always on full pelt so when you went indoors you had to practiclly undress yourself. Hated it.
That's actually what I dislike most about cold weather - you dress up warm, then when you get inside it's warmer than it is in summer! not only must this use an enormous amount of energy/money, but it also makes dressing appropriately a real pain. My school is particularly efficient at keeping the temperature at a healthy 40'C - in summer they shut the windows because "it's noisy outside", and then in winter they turn the on/off beast down in the cellar on and it's like walking into an oven!

i guess is down to what you are used to. Back home the lowest temp goes down to is around 6c and homes are poorly insulated, with no central heating.
Last Winter was quite bad, temperatures reached as little as -20 to -30 in southern Finland. North Finland was maybe a little more than -40 degrees. Lots of snow too!

So I moved here from Australia in July and am not sure what to expect from the winter here. This can also be a spec me a winter clothing thread as well, what sorts of clothing will I want for the winter and where should I go to look from them? I'm not uber poor but wanting to keep most of my monies for travelling so don't rule out primark!
I have a hoodie, but I don't think this will be enough will it? Also my main concern is a decent wet-weather jacket to wear with my work gear to and from work.
You moved from Oz to here? Are you insane??!!!?!! Why would anyone want to live in the UK? It's dire...
