Dyslexia or just dumb?

You've been reading the daily mail too much.

I'm dyslexic, and rather predictably, my son has learning disabilities too.

What provision has been made for him at school ?

A slated writing board and some pencil grips !!

I would never even go near the Daily Mail, let alone read it.

where did you get this daft idea that providing for kids with SEN consists of giving out free laptops etc.. ??

Aside from the government funded extra tuition which brought his reading age back from being 3 years behind to just 1, he only has a few pencil grips and a writing board provided for him !

I wonder if the rate of [diagnosed] dyslexics is a higher proportion in the 'geek community' than the general population? I certainly see suggestions that an awful lot of nerds are borderline (if not full blown) Asperger's. :p

It's long been "fashionable" for geeks to think they are autistic, or have Asperger's, because they believe it signifies increased scientific or mathematical ability, Rain Man stylee.

Slashdot is a nightmare for it.

There's a test called the AQ test which can be used to diagnose autism and the like, insofar as those with high scores are typically autistic. It's more correlation than anything else, but it's pretty good from what I understand of it. Anyway. 80% of autistics score 32 or above on the test. I scored 34. Now, am I genuinely autistic (somewhere on the spectrum) or do I just game my answers in the right direction to appear that way, because as a geek I too "aspire" to be autistic?

i'm not dyslexic and i'm not sure whether it is a genuine thing if i'm honest. i do know this thread seems to have an unpleasantness to it though.

Its the same with OCD, a lot of people here claim to have it.

For example, "i tidy my room and like it clean, i must have OCD"

No, maybe its just that you like a clean room?

I think the majority of people are just lazy and/or apathetic about literacy and pull the 'Dyslexia card' to get away with it.

I'm sure some people have a genuine word recognition problem though, but I think the actual figure for those people is probably much lower than is thought.

It was thought i might be dyslexic at school cause my spelling was so bad, so i got put in with the specail needs lot and found the work too easy.

I have always had trouble with spelling and writing i tend to write so slow i always struggled to keep up at school. But never had any troubles with reading

But i have improved my spelling and worked hard at it but its no where near prefect and i dont think it ever will be.

I do think some people claim to be dyslexic when they are not, when i was put in with the special needs lot they was dyslexic and they really sturggled so i know how hard it is for them.

Its strange because i have a son with learning disabilities i knew what just about every one of those questions was angling towards.

I put in what i thought would be the autistic persons response and got a score of 45 lol.

what a very stupid ignorant post.

Just speaking from experience.

Two of my housemates at University applied for the dyslexia tests (nothing wrong with them) and both got a free computer and a whole host of software and other stuff.

My mum is a special needs teacher and even she thinks it is getting out of control and so do Ofsted clearly (and finally!)

I'm not having a go at you or your son! (you seem to have taken this very personally ). I am sure your son genuinely has learning difficulties but there are A LOT of liberties taken with the system.

I'm not dyslexic, neither am I autistic or a savant. I am just damned clever.....;)

What does DNA stand for? :p

I only make a few spelling and grammar mistakes if I reply too quickly without proofreading.

I stopped phoning my dyslexic friend, He seemed to have an attitude problem, every time I rang him he'd answer "O Hell!"
