Free to play is pretty much just a extended trial, you get nothing but the starter area, and cant do much. For Lotro its more a gimmick than true free to play ( Yes I play the game on a life time sub) well stopped bout 3 months ago
I've already covered this in another post, but just to clarify the error here...
You get more than the "starter area", you get the shire, bree-land and ered luin. Everything you need to reach around level 22-25. You also get every other area and the full epic questline. You just dont get the quest packs for the additional areas. Doing the deeds in the initial areas gives you more than enough points to get the quest pack for the lone-lands or the north downs which are the next logical areas.
Aside from that the points are shared between your characters so a new player, who would probably roll more than one class anyway to try them out , will end up with plenty of points to get the quest packs for 2 or 3 areas on their main character.
Alternatively a player could simply subscribe for 1 month, which would give them 500 points anyway, then unsubscribe. That would give them enough points to get a couple of quest packs plus have the added bonus of permanently raising their account status from free 2 play to premium. Even further alternatively, subscribe for 3 months and then unsubscribe, which gives you 1500 points, which is enough to reach level 50 via questing (the fewest amount required being 1490 pts, but I feel the 1540pt path is the more viable). Plenty of options there for everyone who doesnt want a permanent subscription.
