Tell me about the Volvo S40

BMW use it in the Cooper D as well!

To be fair it is probably a fixed problem now and the engines are wholly reliable. It is probably the most popular diesel engine on the road so can't be that bad.

You should definately look at the D5 though, may find within your budget and won't be quite as dull as the 2.0D, especially coming from a 182.

I had the 52 plate s40 1.8 petrol, was a fantastic car in the sense of reliability and quite comfortable, really chewed up the motorway and there's ample space in all areas of the car. It did drive a bit like a boat though, handling was OK but there was certainly nothing exciting about it. Still in over 2.5 years of ownership I had exactly zero problems with it, not a thing.

If you have to go diesel, look at the D5, you'll be slightly less likely to fall asleep driving it.

The DMF is only a problem when it breaks. i don't know if a 54 S40 will have one, they didn't appear on the S60 until later i think 2006.

My parents have had a v50 for 5 years now, its never missed a beat, very nice to drive if not a little boring, but thats not always a bad thing. But they are smaller inside than you would first expect.

^^^ The D5 engines around 02/03 suffered from injector problems, being a common rail direct injection unit. Not sure what the attrition rates are for later cars, so probably best if the OP does his research on this if he's considering a D5.

Most of them will have been done by now, there is a way of checking but i'm not sure how much dismatling is entails. Later ones are much less likely to have problems.
