What would you do (motorway slip road)

Had to drive to Manchester and back on Friday to drop some stuff off for work. On the way back I stopped at some services on the M6 for lunch. On the way out I noticed a couple of cars in front of me almost on the slip road to rejoin the M6 going rather slowly and braking, so I hang back a bit hoping they'll be gone so I can get a good run up.

I figure I've given them enough time and start to accelerate round the bend, only to see that they have stopped and are waiting to join the motorway. There are now 3 of us stopped on the slip road. I didn't want to attempt to join the motorway in case one of them tried at the same time so had to wait.

By the time we got onto the motorway I had a quick look over at the first car and noticed that it was an old man who seemed oblivious to what he had just done.

What would you lot have done? Waited or attempted to join the motorway and hope that neither of the other cars tried at the same time?

overtaken him on the slip road, whilst doing these things at once,

give him the bird
obsessive use of the horn
nasty glare as i went past him

Get angry and probably would have undertaken him on the slip road, he's trying to pull right in to lane 1 so I reckon that would be the "safest" course of rage*

Who the hell stops on a slip road? It's bad enough when people try and join lane 1 @ 20mph and wonder why they get abuse from the car who has just caught up.

*obviously not safe

Waited and hung back - no point increasing an already dangerous situation!!!
Am quite shocked that people would risk anything else, what if one of the other cars decided to do the same?

How long would you have waited for? He might have been there for a quite a while/until police arrived? The choices you have also change with how quickly you can accelerate to the motorway speed.

I don't think I'd have undertook but would test how good my car's 0-60 is if there is a adequate gap.

Wait, but if he took ages and there was a gap I'd just go round him and head straight into lane 2. Or lane 3 if someone else tried the same thing. Or the central reservation if both the other cars tried the same thing.

Wait a minute...

To give you an idea, it was Sandbach services heading south and the car that had stopped causing me and another car to stop was roughly where the white car on google maps is:

gone down the left and onto the hard shoulder slowly, then accelerated to merge in with traffic.

Its like the nutter on motorway cops a few weeks ago, heading the wrong way down a motorway in the outside lane, in thick snow completely unaware it was a motorway and not aware he'd done anything worng

Should be a compulsory driving test at 70 imo, not just re-apply for your license with a doctors note.

Probably would have passed him on the left (definitely not on the right), possibly with added horn, depending on how much rage the service station prices had instilled in me.
