Just wondering. Me and a mate are looking to start a new hobby and thought of martial arts.

I've got a terribly cynical view of martial arts involving fat men teaching young kids useless ******. Totally unwarranted I know, so I was hoping some of you chaps could influence me either way, or dare I say it, suggest something else?

dunno where you have seen 'fat men' teaching it but what do you mean by 'is it worth doing'? totally depends what you want to get out of it and a lot depends on what you decide to learn.

are you wanting to do it for fun, to improve fitness, self defense?

It depends what you want from it.

If you're doing it for self defence and want your money to spent on the 'most effective' fighting art then well, that's where there is a lot of debate. Different martial arts have different ways of executing their skill.

However if you're just taking it as a hobby, or want to get fit then in my eyes any martial art will do. They're very varied and you'll get a lot out of it.

Just looking to get and about more to be honest, at the moment my social life consists of hanging round people at university, getting drunk in pubs and clubs and thats about it.

Want to broaden my horizons and what not without having to resort to drugs.

so you arent interested at all in the different styles? if not thats ok, I suggest you go along to local classes and see how many people are doing it, whether they are in your age group, does it look like fun. Go to a few before deciding which class to start with.

I took up Muay Thai in an effort to help my fitness. Ha. In the end I had to up my fitness to help my Muay Thai.

Really enjoyed it, mixed classes makes it all more fun. Sparing with the guy with tree trunks for legs, not so enjoyable.

Go along to a local class and banish those poor misconceptions.

I've done a fair few martial arts - my dad teaches - and Judo was my fave by quite a margin. Most of the others involved punching/kicking the air and bags, the occasional bit of sparring, but not much else and were a little dull. Messing about with plastic knives was quite fun. The difference for me was that in Judo you get to practise what you're taught and as a result was more interesting and much better exercise. The Jujitsu/Karate guys always got torn a new one in mixed comps as they didn't know what to do when the fighting was full contact they were grabbed and chucked about :)

Nah, not really interested in styles, just something where you can have some friendly wrestling or whatever.

edit: didn't see the above two responses.

Check out the clubs around you and find one that suits what your after. For me i want to be sparring and competing regularly and get to spar 3 times a week but have been competing much so while not exactly what i want its not bad, thats freestyle kickboxing. I enjoy boxing more but no uni club so ive made do. Everyone will have a different opinion on whats best so give as much as you can a go.

If you can find a local decent club then Brazilian Jujitsu for the win, plenty of 'friendly' wrestling to be had there. Failing that then Judo or normal Jujitsu.

Martial Arts are good to do, but can cost a fair amount of time and money to take seriously.

It's worth it if you can find a good club. The quality of the instructor is more important than the actual martial art being taught in my opinion.
