Why do you think people feel the need to change others? Or argue to the point you've proven them "wrong" in your eyes

Some examples from this forum

In the CPU section it's AMD vs. Intel
If an OP requests help, AMD fans push AMD, Intel Push Intel. Often with disregard for the OPs needs and their willingness to spend a set budget

In the Console section it's 360 vs. PS3
Again, if an OP requests help in purchasing a console, Fans of each console will push the OP in the direction of their preferred console, regardless of what the OP is wanting

Along a similar line, If you say you dislike or LOVE a particular game you end up with people trying to change your mind and tell your why it's crap or fantastic, and that you're a loon for believing otherwise!

Religious threads, Believers of faith vs. None believers, these threads go on for pages with people who don't believe telling believers they're wrong and stupid, and believers delivering the same in return.

There's lots of other little "wars" going on, Mac lovers vs. PC lovers, Android fans and Iphone Fans, Nvidia vs. ATI.

Is there some sort of underlying need in human existence to have everyone follow the same train of thought and beliefs as yourself? And if you find someone wanting something else, why do we need to fight that hard to stop this and make them see the "error" of their ways.

It's the same reason BMW cars are the superior motor vehicle for driving enjoyment and all round bodacity. Everything else should just step to one side.

i think if i watched a great movie/played a great video game/visited some foreign destination then yeah i'd recommend it to others because i'd want them to enjoy it as well?

When People think that they are right or have made a good choice they want to help their fellow brothers ?

LOL most of the time they do it for the sake of arguing or one-upmanship. There are those that want to help but the rest are just keyboard warriors. It’s funny how argumentative they get because they’re not face to face and just hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. I’m sure that half the time it’s the anonymity that makes them do it.

thats fair enough, and nothing wrong with it.

I'm talking more about when someone starts a thread called...

"Spec me a sandwich"

And you get a response of

"Have a chicken sandwhich it's lush"

Nothing wrong with that atall, Its the posts that come there after of

"Chicken, what are you a ****"

"Chicken, how can you say chicken you must have the common sense of a brick!"

"I can't believe you said chicken, Ham is far superior, Chicken is 1 step away from what you'd find in a babies nappy"

.... Just an example btw :p and far far removed from what is actually seen on the forum

Not too far, though :) I tried to get into the two religion threads floating around in here and Speakers Corner, but TBH, I can't be arsed, for the above reason :D

Everything seems to have a pretty short half-life on internet forums, before it turns into frothing and keyboard-mashing.

I feel this is appropriate.

Because people like to justify their purchases/beliefs and convince themselves they have made the right choices in life :)

Not if you're content. Then such stuff matters not.

I don't think there's a single answer, but rather multiple answers that fit each person and situation.

It could be a desire to be 'right', and to make others see that you're right and admit they're wrong. One-upmanship, so to speak.
If you feel you've stumbled across the truth, there is often a desire to spread that 'truth' to others. (Evangelism, the sharing of religion/ideologies for example)
Perhaps some sort of community instinct which encourages us to share our beliefs and opinions with others.

Human nature. Despite some people thinking its unique to this forum, its not. Go anywhere and its the same. Go to a mud hut in Africa and two people are arguing over who has the best spear.

If you suggest something you personally like and the person goes against it, then it's a insult of your taste (how you react to it however is another thing).

So I don't think it's so much about trying to change others.
