Out of kilter punishments?

I know what he did was really wrong - but jail time? In my view his drink driving offence posed more harm to society than killing a hamster. What about all the people who steal from others who don't get any jail time? People who start fights?

The RPSCA have too much power.

Stealing rarely causes suffering. Microwaving an animal just because you had a row is unncessary cruelty.

It's throroughly unconstitutional that a charity can bring about private prosecutions that result in criminal convictions. Such things should be left to the police.

Great sentence for being so inhumane and being a bad example to children. Serves the drunken git right.

But not sentencing?

Ask any law student about magistrates - they are ridiculous idiots who don't even have a law degree and tend to get carried away with emotion and convict regardless of the evidence.

Are you joking?

I am not joking at all. Although actually my post was probably quite misleading. It's actually not a problem of too much power, it's the power they exercise and the ways they gather 'evidence'. Actually - when an RSPCA inspector comes to 'interview' you should just tell them to get lost. They have absolutely no power to come into your home unless they have a police warrant which is extremly unlikely.

Since circa 2006 the police don't get involved in animal cruelty cases - they simply hand over any information they have to the RSPCA. So if this guy knew his rights he would never have been prosecuted because there would have been insufficient evidence for it to go to court.

But Mr Taylor said: "This is a man so drunk he puts a hamster into a microwave and kills it."

There's something quite funny about that quick retort.

His rights were never taken away as it is reported, what is the problem?

Why do people like this get such low punishments in the line of "banning them from keeping animals"? in this case for 5 years, you do like something that the ban should be permanent imo.

My problem is that the country is out of balance!

The RSPCA prosecute as much as the possibly can because it generates revenue for them. Cases like this are free advertising, people give more money to the RSPCA. It's a sickening trend. They are are ridiculously well funded.

However - when someone is arrested for common assault there is no charity to prosecute, no public over-reaction, and the police decide it's not worth public resources to prosecute.

Glad to see I'm not alone in despising the arsepca and the frankly eye-watering abuses of their non-existent 'power'. They're criminals with a political agenda, tbh.

As it happens though, from the wording of the BBC it seems that they weren't directly involved in this particular case. Unless Auntie has decided that all arsepca charity workers (with the starting 'rank' of 'inspector' - lol) are now 'officers'.

EDIT: To be clear, I wholly agree that someone microwaving a hamster deserves punishment in line with the law. However it remains a criminal law and as such I prefer a body such as the police, with an 'overseer' (CPS) to do the prosecuting. Not some trumped up charity with no legal powers, and importantly, no independent body vetting their carefully chosen publicity stunts. Sorry, I mean prosecutions.

he killed what is basically a fluffy mouse and got 9 weeks!!!

I could go out rob a house punch someone in the face and steal a car all while high on crack and still get less of a punishment
