Should I buy a Phenom just to help AMD out?

I'm in need of a new system and I'm thinking that this time round I should really help AMD out and buy a Phenom rather than an Intel i7.

Is this crazy? I'm not a gamer, I work as a programmer and all the machines I've ever used as a professional are Intel, my laptop even has an quad core i7 processor in it.

I guess in a way I feel slightly sorry for AMD, especially in the business sector but it seems crazy that I would base a technical purchase on anything other that performance, price and power.

Is the Phenom good enough?

Don't feel sorry for a company lol you nut job :D

Besides, AMD are on the verge of releasing some products that may well change the state of play in the industry.

Buy what you need to your budget

Phenom II is a good platform and processor, but buy based on budget, needs, and performance in the applications you are going to be using.

Never buy based solely on brand.

The Phenom II and x6 are good processors, you're hardly doing yourself an injustice by purchasing either!

...sad but I bought my Phenom even though I knew the Intel chips were better at the time of purchase. Always had AMD so just stuck with them.

what processor were you thinking of? 1055t is almost as fast as a an i7 950 if the program can actually use 6 cores but if your working with programs that only use a few cores i7 will be faster but probably not by a difference you will notice

No you should buy it because its the one you want or at least the one that fits your budget. Maybe have a look at some comparisons to see which will suit your needs better, if gaming isnt the issue then the amd will be great (and not just because its poor old amd and they need the business.... because its a good chip for the work you want).

£225 amd 6core chip vs £705 intel 6core chip. Is it price/performance or just performance your after?

maybe if this was about 3 years ago, when it was looking like AMD we really in the **** id say yes. However, their position is much more stable lately, and might (hopefully) gain a fair bit of ground with upcoming products. As said before, go for the best your money can buy, regardless of brand.

I see what you're getting at. They are still the underdog, and the last thing you and me want is Intel becoming a monopoly.

anandtech compare is not accurate as we have proved before..

look up the amd vs intel encoding thread on these forums funny how are amd results were much better than those listed on anandtech.

look up the cinebench results we got on these forums compared to anandtech.

makes you wonder how many of there other results were done on outdated software that showed amd in a bad light

Indeed, the encoding thread we had comparing the performance of the old software reviewers were using, vs the latest version with the amd optimisations in were huge.

The X6 is a great CPU for the money.

I doubt a decent Phenom chip will hold you back for programming. Sure, an i7 will very likely do a large compile faster than a Phenom, but I doubt the time difference would equate to the price difference of the chip and motherboard.

That being said, if you can get a stonkin' i7, get one! Always been an AMD user myself, but the speed of some of those i7s is incredible! :)

Thanks, I guess it is silly to base my decision on emotions rather than technical results, thats what women do! I guess after seeing Intel all day long in the office and server room I'd almost forgotten about AMD.

The i7 is a wonderful chip and very fast, but even the largest model or project compile is only going to be at most 30 seconds different. I could build the projects 10 times in the same time it takes to make a cup of tea so I think I will go AMD this time to save a bit of cash on the CPU and spend the rest on a SSD.

Thats a very good plan tbh.

Perhaps we could organise a telethon to help even further?

Comic AMD Relief in Need or something along those lines.

Hello Five_Star :)

Is the Phenom good enough?
I never understand why people ask this question? . . . your the only one who can decide what is "good enough" . . . how can you let someone else tell you what is best for you? . . . your the expert . . . your the guru?

performance, price and power
Are you referring to performance/power as the same thing or are you meaning power-consumption?

Is this crazy?
This forum is full of people who base their purchases on little of their own "reason" and generally follow the GroupThink flock so I suggest you either stop thinking and do what others do . . or have a good think about it and do what makes sense to you! :p

I'd almost forgotten about AMD
