Are Audi losing the plot on their key USP, i.e. nice interiors?

Most of the mechanical bits of Audi's are shared with other VAG cars, and are therefore typically a bit mundane (at least until you get to their hand me downs from Lambo). However, I've felt for years that Audi interiors come across as being a step ahead of pretty much every vaguely similarly priced cars.

Yesterday I got a lift in my project managers shiny new A5 (4 door version). I might aswell have got in a Polo, really did feel very similar, i.e. similar grade plastics. Worse still was that the internal door handles and alumium trim certainly weren't aluminium or alloy. They were all the same type of high grade plastic that BMW uses in Minis.
Unfortunatley I hate immitation alloy and alumium almost as much as the use of fake wood and carbon fibre (surely you use CF to replace structural members and REDUCE weight, NOT to tart up some lardy arsed shopping trolley).
Have Audi recently appointed an accountant to run the company? I certainly don't remember older Audis in the last few years using so much plastic.

I can't help but think that Audi's have for the last decade been a real hit because of their showroom appeal (ie. they might be mostly rubbish to drive, but they're a nice place to be when you're in a traffic jam). If they keep this up, we'll all end up buying Mondeos, when you at least get reasonable VFM on the plastic.

It looks pretty damn good though :p

To answer your question: yes an accountant runs the audi division.

When i open the glovebox of my bmw a light comes on, when i do it in my a5 no ****ing light. Also my bmw has an auto-dimming rear view mirror, not the a5 as it is a now optional extra.

P.s my bmw is 8 years old, while the audi is 1.

I honestly don't know why so many people are sooo hell bent on 'interior plastic feel'. How about the seats? were they comfy?

I was only in the rear, but I prefer the seats in my Volvo. Being fair, that's hardly a surprise as I've yet to sit in any car more comfortable than my Volvo.

See if people moaned about the seats being uncomfy then fair du's...as thats a pretty critical part...but the door handles...I mean...really? :p

Normally that kind of comment comes from people that drive crap cars. What do you drive?

Another question for you - do you care about the quality of materials in your living room, bathroom, or bedroom?

On average you probably spend less time in the bathroom than in a car (or maybe not judging by your lovely hairdo ;)) so if you care about quality of materials there, you should certainly care about the quality of materials in your car cabin.

Regardless of what I drive that doesn't mean to say I haven't been in several 'prestige' brands, regularly as well.

Honestly, I couldn't careless what the interior door handle feels like, or how well the external material for the glovebox compares to the plastic underneith the handbrake :p

And inside your house doesn't compare to the inside of your car. When I'm in the car I look at the road oddly enough :p, and care about how comfy the seats are (as previously mentioned) as thats what I sit on and cannot stand a back ache whilst driving.

Also, you say about 'that comment comes from people who drive something crap' - thats not to say if I had buckets of money I wouldn't drive something much better...oh no, but I wouldn't buy whatever it so the material covering the dashboard would be suitable to use for masturbation :p

Oh and so someone else doesn't get the smugness and thinks I'm trying to avoid it, I drive a crappy 55 reg Citreon Van  - It's red, noisy, and slow.

I don't believe for a second an A5 doesn't have a glovebox light

It doesn't if you didn't pay for the optional interior lighting pack...

Audi interiors are lovely if you spec them right, but frequently very basic if you don't.

The front seats are very comfortable and very snug, you dont need to move. The less said about the rear seats in the coupe the better.

p.s. why is it an optional extra? for the top of the range spec you expect the small options to be thrown in.

Because it's Audi. BMW are very similar.

To spec an S4 to a similar spec to a standard R36 would add about £10k to the list price...

I sat in one of the new A8s the other day, i was quite impressed, but then again, it is one of the more expensive models

When I'm in my living room I look at my wife or the TV, but I still don't want my living room to look cheap and nasty, whether or not my sofa's comfortable.

You were not talking about how things look though. You were talking about how things feel, which is what I was referencing?

me either

thats why the vauxhal didnt bother me.

As long as its pleasing to look at thats all i care about. A few rattles and squeaks dont bother me so long as its not incessant.
