wife wants a chevrolet spark....

Spending 7k on a shopping trolly but quibbling over the road tax? Really?
Spend £1000 on a Fiesta/Clio/Corsa and even with higher tax you're still several grand up on the deal.

On what planet is 6k plus for a 7 year old hatch cheap?

Was just about to say, the new Mini offers some of the worse value for money possible on the car market due to it's chic following, small size and being made by BMW (obviously is more premium than other small cars).

none of the above, she's completed an advanced driving course. No its something to do with smaller engine = being greener. I hear what your saying re safety, but she is happy that most newish cars are pretty safe.

but i can see where your coming from.

rotters

theres green and then theres driving a car.

and then theres american, and china smogging up the joint. does it really matter if the car u buy puts out 10% more emissions than another one? why not buy 2nd hand and reduce new car demand. afterall, how can it been green to manufacture a new car at all when an older one would suffice.

green=/ logic

I see minis for under £3k (after a haggle). I'm ignoring the silliness of the green issue.
Women like minis.

3k Mini, lol good luck with that.

What exactly is wrong with that? It's not rock bottom and not over 10 years old. Like any car they should be looked over but it's an option.
Not like the car is gonna be doing long journeys and is gonna have lots of mileage put on it.

A 3k mini will be hanging. The aren't the most reliable of cars at the best of times, but you'd be scraping the bottom end of the market at that price and buying yourself a trendy money pit.

You say it's not rock bottom, but the only MINIs I have seen significantly cheaper than £3k are salvage cars (or ex-salvage cars).

Never looked at how reliable they are so wouldn't know that a car less than 10 years old would generally be such a bag of *****.
Also I never said significantly below £3k, I said under 3k with a haggle :p

You are wrong, environmentally. All of your arguments except your first comment are incorrect.

explain, if you say, took china and the US out of the equation, that we wouldnt have a huge reduction in terms of environmental impact? what % of the UK emissions vs china and us? im betting extremely low...

and do you have any figures that would prove that say, driving a car with 10% less emissions is going to, over say a lifetime of 5 years that the 10% increase would actually be any less than the emissions to create the new car?

otherwise, how can you state that what i said is incorrect/

Get something else for less and go on holiday.

if you fly, wont that be producing more emissions anyway?

basically the point im trying to get to is that if you try to live your life (or one part of it - cars) purely by green ness standards you are going to find that it will cost more, have zero impact and be undone by your next actions anyway?

Im confused.

Last time I went to the petrol station the petrol still cost me money to buy? This is why people want low 'emission' cars.

Emissions have nothing to do with petrol.

Emissions are the gases that come out of the car after the combustion and usually harm the earth in some way.

Fuel useage is down to how economical the engine is with it's fuel.

Where do emissions come from? Burning petrol.

Emissions are roughly proportional to fuel consumption.
