Is it worth changing to a water meter?

Sounds interesting... My water bill is also around £350 per year for a 3-bed semi (in which I am the sole occupant).

What is the one-off cost of switching to metered?

I switched to a meter two years ago.

Before then my Monthly bill was £45! Now it's £7.45

I live on my own. General use is a daily shower, toilet a couple of times a day depending on what I've been eating  washing the pots around 4 times a week and using the washing machine around 3 times a week.

Not a bad saving :)

Does that include your sewerage charge?

Yeh it does apparently..

There isn't one! :)

Have a look into it, after working out how much I use, it should save me a fair bit per year!

Two adults one child plus pets average water use terraced house we pay approx £250 a year with a meter. Before the meter it cost a lot more!

I switched to a water meter about 7 months ago. Similar situation to the OP but water rates of £450 so it was a no brainer to switch. My first bill came through and I was £150 in credit due to having already paid my rates and switching before the 12 months were through. Never received my 2nd bill but wasn't worried due to being in credit. Third bill arrived a couple of weeks ago and I now owe £150! Apparently I have a leak and my drive is due to be dug up on Tuesday. :(

To the OP, definitely switch as your bills will come down. Just make sure they install the meter outside so that they can read it themselves.

United Utilities will let you try a meter for 12 months and if you dont like it you can go back to standing charge, according to the information they sent me.

i wish we wern't on a water meter!!! I have 3 large (ish) fishtanks and change about 500 litres of water every week + cars washed and garden watered in summer :(

Why are you changing the water every week? That is completely unnecessary if your tank is set-up properly.

Bloody hell, I'm paying a lot. :( We pay a standard charge, which works out at just under £700 a year (£58 or so a month). That's a three bedroom detached. The price is double what we paid in our last property, and looking at this thread seems rather steep. :o
