Okay to overtake a police car?

There are moments when the police are just on patrol, and are not trying to get somewhere quickly, they are allowed to go slowly and you are allowed to overtake them.

But I always wonder if I'm allowed to overtake fire engines and ambulances when they have the blues going, I often do (mostly up hills, they have trouble with all the weight)
If this is on a motorway then not a problem, if it was an A road for example there's no point because as soon as you get to any traffic and need to slow down the emergency vehicle will catch you straight back up and now you'll be in their way.
I drive a fire appliance and have had cars try and outrun me, I haven't had one beat me yet.

I often wonder if the old bill enjoy sitting on a motorway in the inside lane doing 62mph knowing all the ***** munchers on the road will be too scared to overtake them and thefore block up all the lanes doing a steady 60mph. I often imagine plod sitting there captivated by the sight oif queuing traffic in their rear view mirrors cackling at the power they think they have over motorway traffic, quite probably this is why they pull people over who actually overtake as it dents their pride and disrupts their rolling road block?

I have really never understood this excuse: in what way were they "baiting you to race"? Tailgating? The world is full of tailgaters. I'll gloss over the fact that cars always look closer looking back than looking forwards. And the fact that cop cars tend to zoom in close for a look at the occupants, stay there until the PNC check is done, then drop back or pass. What exactly is your attitude to other road users that a) you notice "baiting to race", and b) care about it? Even if they sit next to you at the light revving their engine, why should you care? I seriously don't understand this comment. I also notice that the people who claim it happens to them, claim it happens a lot. I'm reminded about the old joke about what all your failed relationships have in common.

thats not an excuse, its an description of their behavour/driving style. its not tailgating, its M&S tailgating. extremely close, dropping back, catching up quickly again, all unnecessarily, which my reaction to is "stupid sod cant drive, im getting away from them before they cause an accident due to their lack of driving ability"

your foot goes down and hey presto theyve got a potential tug

I'm just as surprised as everyone else that I didnt get pulled on those occasions, that was my expectation.

I know they saw me, they know that I know they saw me. On each occasion I was prepared to be pulled over but it didnt happen. Im fairly sure if I still owned a corsa (it was a 1ltr A>B car not a chavmobile) they would have been all over me.

When I had the corsa I had as others have described police riding my ass on several occasions trying to see if I would go over the speed limit, It was the only car I ever got pulled for speeding in, I made the honest mistake of thinking the etruria road in stoke was a 40 (it IS a 40 now, but it was 30 at the time) but i wasnt fortunate enough to get any leniency on that occasion as the cop thought I was one of the chav brigade that hung out at festival park despite the horrible pale blue colour of the car, stock non-lowered suspension, lack of stickers, lack of blow off value or any modified lights hell there wasnt even a girl in the passenger seat wearing too much make up and big hoop earrings (*appologies if any motors folk here fit this kind of profile, Im only jesting)

pretty much not a fan of the police at all to be honest, got pulled of them twice in the space of a month, the first time was driving along at 70MPH on a 70MPH dual carriageway minding my own business, pulled over and asked if I was insured, the second time had me baffled for about three days, pulled over and some copper came alongside me driver window and calmly asked me if I had seen a bloked in a grey hooded jacket..., random or what? when I first got my HGT a short while ago got pulled over on the way back from me mates house in Newcastle and the officer asked me 'what I was doing on the road that night...?', what sort of a question is that?!

what else, got fined for having a faulty nearside headlight which I didn't know about it, it worked most of the time but had fault so it went off from time to time so I got slapped with a £30 fine when the arses could have just pulled me over and said 'mate you got a headlight out...' so to be honest im not big fan of the police at the moment. back on topic, sure you can overtake a police car if its doing under the speed limit, won't even be frowned upon either.

You do realise these are all fairly normal things for a Police officer to do?

Its fairly easy to not spot an unmarked car, and none of the 4 considered me to be driving dangerously or they would have pulled me no?

Or the they couldn't pull you over because of a myriad of other reasons, like they needed to be available to help stop a drug dealer etc.

lol, really? why pull someone up late at night driving home in his Punto with a mate and ask them what they are doing, isn't that a tad obvious? also the one driving along a dual carriageway and getting asked if I have seen a bloke in a grey hooded jacket..? course I haven't Im paying attention to whats infront of me not people walking along the path..! failing to see how those could be considered 'normal' for any reason..?

Not really

They were obviously looking for someone in a grey hooded jacket and were wondering if you'd seen him. How did this manage to leave you baffled for 3 whole days?

Who wouldn't it be, provided you do so within the law?

Exactly that. It's very irritating when people see a police car cruising at 60mph on the inside lane on the motorway and everyone decides they MUST stay behind it! Very frustating.

Maybe they thought you were a drink driver and when they were talking to you they smelt your breath, didn't smell any alcohol and so let you go?

As for the second instance, maybe someone had just dumped a car after being chased and they wanted to know if you knew what direction he went in?

I sometimes get pulled weekly, they use "we want to make sure the car isnt stolen", it gets a little bit tiring but I suppose if it was stolen I'd be very impressed with their diligence, fortunately it's not yet annoyed me or held me up for anything important and they are usually nice enough so I'm happy to oblige

hm ill crawl past a policecar if its not in the outside lane, but i wont go over 75~ on my speedo to do so.

but isnt going over 60mph on a sliproad illegal or something?

I dont have a problem overtaking police, they should have calibrated speedo's and according to my gps im doing 55mph @60 so 70 is prob 6 or 7mph slower in my car than actually indicated. :D

What right does a policeman have to ask you what you are doing? Last time I looked, driving around is a legal thing providing you are taxed, insured etc.

Nosy sod.

anti terrorism laws have given the police the power to stop and search anyone they like, that was my understanding anyway.

to be fair unless you have something to hide its only a ten minute affair and generally they are as nice to you as you are to them.
