Ps3 buying advice required

Just get used to a pad, using a mouse and keyboard against pad players is cheating.

MAG is receiving and update to allow Playstation Move support too though, which will be more responsive than a pad so might be the middle ground you're after.
 
The Slim looks better in real life than it does on photos, but it's not as good looking as the Phat. However, it's cooler, uses less electricity, has additional features and in my opinion is generally better! My Phat is sitting in a box on top of my wardrobe :p

My Phat is shinier then your slim. My phat is like the cool guy that works out all day at the gym, it could kick your nerdy slim butt anytime.
 
If you are getting a PS3, the slim is quieter, ideal for Blu ray playback. The fans on my old 40 gig were quite loud when playing DVD's and Blu rays at times very distracting.
 
I went from a Phat launch PS3 to a new CECH-2104a Slim with the reduced die RSX and the difference in sound is MASSIVE

The new Slim is so quiet I sometimes worry that the fan isn't working anymore, the noisiest part is the drive when loading from disk, the old Phat PS3 was loud the moment I turned it on.

So if you want one as a BluRay player deffo get a new 2104a/b Slim
 
I have both the Phat and a Slim, I have to say looks wise the Phat is prettier, but the Slim functions just that little bit better. It is as most have already said quieter. The Wifi on it also seems faster, as when i was download the recent update on both consoles, the Slim beat the Phat by a fair bit even though i started the DL on the Phat first....

Surely location of the consoles (signal strengh in relation to wifi router) more so that speed of download.

Well all I can say is theres quite a bit of disc noise from reading in games like wc 2010 not talking about bluray playback here also depends on your definition of quiet
 
You didn't mention a budget so,

I would recommend picking up a 2nd hand Fat 40GB PS3, you can get them quite cheap now.

If you don't have a budget, buy a slim for quieter viewing.
 
Can you play PS2 games on the newer slims? Not really helpful for the op but would be a key issue with my back catalogue.

Love my phat PS3, and fans are only noisy on hot days.
