Have you successfully quit smoking?

I know quite a few on here have managed to give up smoking, some found it easy, other not so easy. I found it very easy and gave up for the last time around 6-7 months ago but to be honest, I feel twice as bad now as I did when I smoked 20 a day.

Constant chest infections/wheezing/coughing up blood, no energy, constant headaches, indigestion, lack of sleep, sore limbs etc. None of which were the norm. when I smoked. Maybe I've done irreversible damage from smoking for 25+ years but my Dr. just keeps telling me "it'll probably get better".

My diet remained the same after giving up as did my exercise regime (i.e. non existant) so I'm going to start cycling/jogging to see if it helps, it'll at least give me a bit more energy.

How long did it take for you to start noticing the beneficial (other than the financial) effects of quitting?
 
I have done for 2-3 months at a time, and then cave in and smoke again.

I shall be giving up on Monday again.

When I do manage to, I feel the opposite of you - sleep SO much better, wake up earlier, and have more energy, all within a week or so of giving up
 
I gave up fair few years ago, took around 3-4 weeks before i started feeling the benefits of not smoking, but then I gave up smoking and started exercising so that prob had something to do with it.
 
Same as you tres, i have a few days off work and im trying to give up again.
Are you eating a lot of fresh food etc or processed crap Cuchulain ?
 
quit about 5 years ago

i also started to excercise which i think made a big difference

start gently and build up your excercise to work your heart and lungs and it should take long before you feel better
 
I quit at the beginning of February and stopped for a couple of months. I started again, but still cannot work out what the trigger was. I was not out in the pub, with other smokers or anything. I was just driving home one day and suddenly pulled into a petrol station and bought some smokes.

Gave up yesterday again. Still managing it. One day at a time. :)

Everyone I know who's quit has started to feel better within weeks if not days of quitting.

Maybe your porblems are not smoking related. I'd get to the doctors ASAP.
 
I've never been a big fruit and veg man, I don't really eat much processed food either though, very rarely eat junk food and tend to cook proper meals every night.

I'm hoping it's just a lack of exercise, I work from home and sit on my arse most of the day, then after getting everyone's dinner and getting them to bed I sit on my arse for the remainder of it, by all accounts I should look like Rick Waller, I don't though, but I bet he's healthier than me!
 
Maybe your porblems are not smoking related. I'd get to the doctors ASAP.

I thought that myself but he wasn't interested and put it all down to quitting smoking, well, I have a whole exercise regime planned, I'll give it a month or so and go back and see him if it's still the same.
 
I gave up 6 years ago. I found it really easy to quit. Since then I've smoked on about a dozen separate occasions.

I didn't really notice the health benefits of quitting. I started when I was 14 and quit when I was 18. I was regularly going to the gym/playing rugby at the time so I was in pretty good shape in spite of the smoking.

Have you seen a doctor?
 
I have now been clean from death sticks for six years.
Since I decided to stop smoking those six years ago I haven't smoked once.

Both me and the wife (then girlfriend) decided to stop smoking at the same time.
We each had a final cigarette one Saturday evening and then threw away what we had left.
Because there were two of us I don't think either wanted to disappoint the other.
We took the "Cold Turkey" route - first couple of days were hell, but once we'd got through one week we knew we'd make it.

Benefits:
We are both a lot healthier.
We don't stink all the time.
We are better off financially

Win/Win/Win
 
I've never smoked before but you've got more or less the same symptoms I had a few weeks ago Cuchulain. It turned out I had a touch of flu and a pretty nasty chest infection. I've been on and off anitbiotics and painkillers for a few weeks now and I'm only just recovering, you might want to get yourself to the doctors again.
 
My barber who is a thorough skeptic, been smoking for 30 years since the age of 13, went for a 3 hour hypnotherapy session. He says he didn't pay a lot of attention and his mind was wandering throughout.

He says since then, he hasn't felt the need for a cigarette, and has been without one for 5 weeks. No mood swings, no cravings, no replacements - just walked out and stopped. The thought of lighting up turns his stomach now.

Could be worth a try - he says they only need one session.

Bloody doctors again :( 4 visits now in 6 months compared to none in many, many years when I smoked.
 
Been stopped now for about 20 months after smoking for about 16 years and dont really feel any different than i did then to be honest.

I suppose the main difference is that i no longer smell of smoke all of the time, financially it didnt make too much difference as i smoked rollies.

I know that i am healthier for not smoking but i dont feel healthier, i also dont think that food tastes any better either, i just dont have a fag after eating the food!

There's definately some kind of psychological switch that get's flicked when some people give up, happened to me, tried for years on and off to give up and had a sudden epiphany on the toilet "£6 a DAY???", stopped immediately and didn't have any cravings or withdrawal symptoms.

It also feels good to be a self righteous ****** when my wife smokes and do the whole fake coughing thing, trouble is I end up in in fits of convulsions choking my guts up nowadays so the jokes on me!

I'd almost forgotten that, food tastes exactly the same still and I still don't have a sense of smell whatsoever.
 
I smoke e-cigs now, used to smoke upto 40 marlboro lights a day, now I toke on my 'vap a few times a day, its a bloody good invention bearing in mind I've smoked since I was 12 and never managed to even cut down!

cant really sum up how much better I feel after my mate told me about them, feel like a rather large idiot for the first couple of days but after that I've never looked back
 
My dad just stopped smoking one day when I was about 10 years old. That was over 20 years ago and you can visibly see the age and health differences between him and my mum who still smokes heavily.
