High Octane Unleaded?

This was my point. I explained to the op why the lowest grade is called premium.

Mike disagreed, cue huge thread.

The lowest grade in the UK is called 'Unleaded'

Shell call theirs 'Fuelsave unleaded' for example

All modern cars have an ECU with map, most of them via a knock sensor will tune the timing to match the fuel. What can often happen is you get a dodgy tank and the ECu will detect knock, this will retard the ignition and give you lower power (but safe power). This where cheapo "get an extra 20bhp" fake chips do their thing messing with the sensor readings to trick the ECU, more power yes = more risk yes.

In the old Scooby days one trick was the famed ECU reset, this involved disconnecting the battery and letting the ECU backup reset, the car would then revert to the settings that assumed higher RON fuel, it would fairly quickly relearn but would be a bit faster till it did so. Multiple sets of "testing" were done, full throttle up steep hill with 5 up, vs a million other things.

Most cars will notice a diff on higher RON, you the driver will probably not. Higher RON = probably more advance and hence more power.

The key factor is the ECU and its ability to learn, some are horribly slow and some are faster, they all work the only way possible by advancing to the point of knock then backing off. They will not be great at doing this, and will have a limit, thats where custom ECUs come in that are mapped more specifically to your unique engine. If yo udo get a custom map you need to be very careful on fuel from that point. Some ECUs will never detect knock on our fuels as they are very high compared to a lot of countries.

Most of our cars would work on 90RON as the ECU would pull the timing right back really quickly.

Very few have active systems.

Its simply a passive system with a retard if knock is detected when running the engine calibration map. Most calibration for UK cars will be based on 95 RON therefore it makes no difference if you are above 95 RON as assuming no mechanical faults or sensor problems the engine will not knock and there will be no ignition retardation.

The ebay chips are usually inlet air to trick the ECU into thinking its a lot cooler and hence fuel enrichment and spark advance correction for that condition is the attempt to make more power.

I wish this it has a knock sensor so can change the whole calibration myth would be put to bed. Very few cars have such a system, earliest is the Saab Turbos and pretty much the best is the BMW M5 V10 with spark-ionisation sensors.

Argh

Obviously the op was imagining things when the pump said premium then.

No he wasnt, but pumps now say all kinds of things like Vpower, Momentum, Ultimate, Fuelsaver, all of which are purely marketing claims.

Since EN228:2008 the term 'premium' can also be moved into that catagory. It's no longer required to be on the pump

Hence what I said in the first place - "It's just a name".

It was a name defined by legislation which said it had to be called "premium" if it met certain standards.

Its not like all of the petrol stations suddenly throught premium was a great name for it and all deceided to use it. They were made to.

Yea, you totally knew that when you started posting.

I still think it is a legal requirement, btw, but this thread is becoming more and more ridiculous.

Your argument was that the name Premium meant nothing. My argument was that the name Premium means its 95 RON fuel. I added context by explaining the rationale behind the name Premium.

Given that OP was so confused over what Premium was that he ended up paying more for High Octane fuel, I wonder whose original point was really the right one?

Haha which you had no clue about.

You got lucky but still came accross as an aboslute tool.

I'll quote you:

Premium is just a name, it is normal unleaded.

Regardless of what you say, you were wrong. Normal and Premium are different. If the naming standards have changed (which I am sure you were completely aware of) then why didn't you say that in your first post?

Blatantly you talk out of your ****.

Swing blind enough times your bound to hit eventually.

Are they? Premium = 95, the most common "grade" of fuel in this country, also the lowest, right? This is the petrol most people will be using so is normal.

Premium is just a name, I was pretty sure of this but have better things to do than go looking for a document that isn't the easiest to find without paying to prove this. This is because I couldn't care less if you believe what I have to say.

I found it quite easy to find.

Relatively, think this is the key word.

Its called Premium for a reason, while it is "normal" here its not called normal is it? Its not a name. Its a grade.

Whether you like it or not.
