Nice English City in the South?

Colchester is definitely not bad, not the best, I wouldn't recommend it though lived here 17 years.

It has a castle though!

Plus the zoo is awesome!

Cheers for backing me up too, when was the last serious incident (Murder, mugging, raping etc.) in Colchester you heard of?

I cant remember lol!

Its not really in the South and really stretching the distance - but one of the nicer places if your heading out with the GF would be somewhere like Stratford upon avon.

EDIT: As above Bath would be a good call.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Brighton - 30 mins from Gatwick, plenty of upmarket and downmarket attractions, a seaside city. Not my cup of tea but lots of other people seem to like it.

+ 1

I'm sick to the back teeth of it myself having grown up in the area but it's popular. Try the lanes etc for alternative shops?

Lived in B-Town for a few years. Great place! Spend ages wandering about the lanes, go down the old pier, sit on the very uncomfortable beach, have a few cheeky drinks on the sea front, tea in the Grand etc. DO IT

Eh?

Im sure it was voted safest town in Britain not so long ago!

Apart from the Squaddies fighting on a Friday night (Pretty much a given, being a garrison town and all!) , i never really see anything else :)

Yeah the Garrison town thing was what I was referring to :) Might be better now, but had a few dodgy nights out when I was at uni there in 2001.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! The missus is feeling Bath at the moment, so unless anyone else has any better suggestions? :p We're looking to book this in about an hour so keep 'em coming! :D

If he lives near gatwick then I'm sure they have been to Brighton often!

Bath is a good option, it will be under 2 hours if the traffic is good :)

Bath, it's a bit further than you'd like but well worth a visit!

How about Windsor? You've got the castle, the theatre, nice restaurants and shops - it's worth visiting just not sure there's enough to do for a few days (more like 1/2 days max).
