Hi all

As you guys were so hot on the flights yesterday my next question is about hotels. I've looked on Expedia and various others but it is a minefield!

I'm looking for a nice (3*+) hotel close to down-town Vancouver for a week in March 2011 for around £500 (double room). I thought i'd found a nice Best Western hotel for £485 with breakfast until I got to the booking part and found another £80+ in taxes added.

Has anyone stayed in a hotel that meets my requirements that they can recommend?

Cheers!

I stayed here in the summer http://www.choicehotels.ca/en/vanco...lumbia-CN072-en?promo=gglocal&tab=0&cid=18855

It's down the road from the Best Western so you can pop down to White Spot (in Best Western) for breakfast.

It's not in a bad location. There is a bus stop outside and it's a short walk from most things. There's a comically small pool out the back, but it's okay.

I'm not sure on the cost but it's well worth checking it out.

I stayed in the Chateau Granville Courtyard which ticks the central (if rather seedy) location box, the rooms were very nice but it was frickin noisy outside - went on till 2am :( . It might be different in the Tower however. Cost IIRC was £60 a night, but the exchange rate was good back then.

Westin isn't bad if you can get a deal. There is a few motels on Granville St but I would avoid them if you want peace and quiet. The skytrain system is pretty damn good (every 4mins on the expo line) so i would seriously think about staying out of downtown if its a lot cheaper. (I used to live Downtown near Burrard st station and regularly went for beers at the other end of the line at King George skytrain)

EDIT, i am sure you know, avoid the eastend of downtown.

can i ask why you are going to vancouver?
I can probably suggest some places but good to get an idea of what you are wanting to do while there, also what time of year are you heading there for?

Going to Vancouver as my wife has always wanted to go ever since she can remember. I've wanted to go to Canada so Vancouver it is! Two birds, one stone! Going towards the end of March next year, just general sight seeing. All suggestions of what to do while there welcome!

So Skytrain is the way to get around is it? What about buses?

I did see a nice hotel called the Howard Johnson North Burnabys Boutique Hotel on Hastings Street. It gets 4.2 out of 5 on Expedia, is 3*s and not too far from Down-town Vancouver.

If you buy a transport pass it works for both skytrain and buses. A daily pass is $9 a day or you can buy a single journey ticket for $2.50+ (depends on zone).

A quick bit of advice if you are getting a train from the airport buy a book of faresavers (2 zone) in the airport otherwise they stick on a big surcharge if you buy from the ticket machine.

Oh back to hotels, when my mother came to visit me she stayed in various B&Bs in the West End, were cheaper than hotels, good locations and pretty nice.

i would try and get a rental apartment on 4th avenue/kitsilano, my folks got a great place there when they came to visit will ask them where they booked through, unless you are set on a downtown location/big hotel, it's cheap enough to eat out (especially if you like sushi!)

you have to be careful with hastings, the closer it is to main street the further you should step away! the buses are pretty decent apart from before 9, around 5 - they are packed, but the same ticket will do you for the sky train/bus/ferry to north van so it's not a case of one or the other...

avoid downtown eastside (or parts of at least)
westend is nice around english bay and the park and kitsilano is nice...
i've lived in both areas, and kits is definitely the quieter and lots of places to eat around 4th ave and broadway, but if you are looking i wouldn't go any further out than macdonald as the transport becomes more of an issue then...

well, that hotel is right at the end of the bridge, so not sure what the noise will be like, but should have a cracking view! some decent bars/resturants in yaletown - but quite pricey too!
my folks say they booked thier apartment through a website called ownerdirect.com, but i've got no experience of them myself (the website, not my folks)

What is the area like around that Best Western hotel?

Just looked at ownerdirect.com and I have to say there are some nice places on there. Just trying to find something in my price range.

don't think that area is too bad, used to have to get the bus just along the road from it, seems a bit dead sometimes but think that's just because it's close to the bridge! you can get a small boat over the granville island from around about there too i think...
davie street is where all the gay bars are but wouldn't let that put you off too much, there's a cracking greek place along there and a great old style diner open all hours
