Old days maybe, its the 21st century now.
I've no issue with people doing what they want to them selves, but children?
It's probably popular in America due to the private healthcare industry, they come up with a bit research proving it to be more hygienic and bobs your uncle an easy $250million a year in profits and the parents are happy thinking it will save their sons nob from falling off.

Surely the fact that you've got an 'as long as...' in there means that, actually, it is more hygenic.

yes, it's exactly the same as Female Genital Mutilation which results in lifelong pain, coupled with enormous chance of infection and an almost complete inability experience orgasm.
there are no other extraneous bits. what physical purpose does the foreskin serve other than to keep the glans out of contact, which keeps it sensitive.
from what i'm aware of, the more sensitive glans is only of any sort of benefit if you like to come in about 5 seconds when masturbating.
<edit> actually, i've just thought of two others, the Tonsils and the Appendix. no-one would bat an eye if a parent elected to have those removed, even if they didn't need to be at the time.

I've also had my tonsils removed and suffered from respiratory infections all through my childhood because of it. Doctors should really stop just cutting bits out of children willy nilly!

I was done at age of 2 as parents were emigrating to aus, and it was considered much more hygienic in hot climate..... Or so they say, also 1/4 Jewish apparently. Who knows doesn't effect me at all... And makes washing your Wang unneeded
