HTC Desire HD (Ace)

With HTC you know your phone will get updates. Samsung got a habit of either not bothering or very slow.

Agreed. I sold my Galaxy S because of this and won't be buying a Samsung smartphone again. Smartphones need good support for updates which Samsung severly lack in. Back to a Nokia E71 which I would never buy, but it has a long battery life so does a job as a phone!

I've decided to get the desire hd over the galaxy s, just for the sheer looks :p I just feel htc are really making quality phones these days, I just thought I may aswell wait 2 weeks and get it :)

Now, I just got to wait for some good contracts to come available. What are orange and vodaphone like as a company, I've always been with o2 and they are really good imo?

I have the Nokia E71 in my hand and bought it 8 months ago from the bay after throwing my HTC Magic against a hard floor.

While I agree that the E71 has a fantastic battery life and it does the job of txting and calls.. it just lacks web browsing that these large screen smartphones are capable of.

I'm still leaning towards the galaxy s. My gf has had one for 4 months now and she has now problem with it, even on stock.

I am not sure it is debatable anymore as surely we would know by now what screen the Desire HD is equipped with, if it was super AMOLED then HTC would have been shouting about it long ago.

Well yeah, I'm just saying we can't yet be certain that the HD's screen won't have had some improvements that make it closer to the SGS, even if it is 'just' SLCD tech.

My wife has pre-ordered the HTC Desire HD, was looking at the Samsung Galaxy S but went for the HTC due to the better screen.

Bigger, yes. Better, probably not.

still only t-mobile have this listed as coming soon on their site. considering Vodafone were there at the announcement you would have thought they might have mentioned it on theirs by now.

I'm still not sure if I want to go contract again or sim free. Vodafone are offering £100 cashback through quidco for phone contracts, t-mobile are offering £80 for all contracts between £20-35 while O2 are doing £60 for phone contracts.

The best on offer at mobilephonesdirect is upto £30

From the reviews I've seen it sounds like atm it's a pretty bogo LCD.

Would be nice to have an OLED screen, but from what we heard a few months ago there's a shrotage of materials for it. Not only that but the OLED screen on the desire was that crazy tiled deal which looked quite poor overall to me.

Either way I wouldn't be swayed from buying it... The only worry being "is it toooo big?" :)

My thoughts too, until I saw the dimensions compared to my X10 (which I think is a great size).

X10 - 119 x 63 x 13 mm, 135 g

HTC Desire HD - 123 x 68 x 11.8 mm, 164 g

Only a fraction more but a bit more weighty.

It's a Super LCD screen. They just don't mention it on the HTC site, because Super LCD belongs to Sony :p

Yes, which is generally considered to be better than (S)LCD.

Actually its swings'n'roundabouts, if you check places like the XDA forums where you have a higher concentration of phone geeks there is quite a movement in favour of SLCD over AMOLED.

The samsung galaxy S is using a Super AMOLED screen, which is by far superior to SLCD and AMOLED.

As for SLCD and AMOLED, they both have advantages over each other and both have disadvantages.

So it's down to what the user wants really.

Personally I would rather have SLCD instead of AMOLED, but if I had the choice, super AMOLED any day or the OLED screen, which the new orange san francisco is using (apparently suppose to look better than the samsung galaxy S SAMOLED screen).

So hopefully mobiles in the future will start to have OLED displays :D

Yeh was just gonna say, SAMOLED means the power efficiency of SLCD isn't an advantage. The screen is also brighter meaning you get get better colours.

SGX540 also is better than Adreno 205. The claims on Adreno 205 are that it closes the gap to the Hummingbird SoC and non of those are actually official.

Cant decide if I should get this or go for a cheaper contract.

Spoke to Orange and they have offered me the Galaxy S for £23 a month 400mins/1500texts/500mb free phone and 12 months.

Or the Desire for £28 a month again free phone same texts/mins/net and 12 months. Seems like a bargain and wont get near that with the HD.

If you can get the SGS for that price i would snap it up.
