Stig on 5th Gear

I was under the impression that TG was a significant contributor to revenue, not a drain.

So was I. Look at merchandise, Top Gear live etc. It sells big.

Hmm well I never thought of that. Which is stupid as I have a stig head :p

How does the funding input into the show and its business franchise sales marry off then?

Is the show self sufficient? I assume that the salary still comes from aunt beeb?

Other than that, it still annoys me for other reasons too. Still watch it though :/

The commercial arm of the BBC is run very separately, the own whole other channels but i don't believe profits are pumped back into the public bbc.

The BBC created a separate division - BBC worldwide, in order to sell BBC content abroad.

The Show is bought by airlines, by foreign TV stations, by people paying for the BBC Worldwide channel aborad

Then theres the DVDs that are sold, the Episodes on itunes, the Top Gear Live shows.

Then theres the spinoff series - Top Gear USA, Top Gear Australia and Top Gear Russia, all of whom their respective broadcasting companies pay a fee to the BBC to use the Top Gear name & show format.

Its hugely profitable, but outisde the UK where obviously we get it all for free (apart from the DVDs, books, calendars, blu-rays, games, t-shirts, asorted merchandise etc..

Theres even a top gear comic for kids !

Oh and dont forget Dave which is a joint venture by BBC worldwide with UKTV which obviously makes money from advertising & being shown on sky, no doubt helped by viewers watching Top Gear repeats.

Top gear is really popular over here, they had a 52 hr or something marathon last week where they showed the entire series back to back, before showing the latest series.

I like Fifth Gear. They actually try to roadtest cars instead of blowing caravans, and doing staged stunts etc.

VBH is great. Gives a different 'flavour' to the programme compared to the OAPs that are the likes of Carkson, May et al.

I think the fact 5th Gear have grabbed Ben Collins shows that the production team are still missing the point in regards to what makes Top Gear popular and 5th Gear not.

Ah, well that takes away the cost concern then. Still don't like how often the trash good cars though! :p

The BBC would suffer if it fails to come up with a populour replacement if that's the case.

they wont even pay for half of the crashed cars

People pay them to get their car some airtime.

The renault twingo one being a prime example.
