This is madness, (NO this is Sparta!!!) I really would like a car now coming up to 20 by the end of the year.

When mates around my age a year ago, maybe a tad older were getting there first cars 1L-1.2L there insurance quotes were around £1.6k comprehensive. So now I'm thinking great I should get a nice quote almost 20 had my license for almost a year, course I was still expecting around 1.5k for a year.

Filled out some quotes on confused.com for a fair few cars ranging 1L-1.3L, ford fiesta, puegot 206 etc. The cheapest so far has been £2.3k with Admiral 3rd party fire & theft, I even put a named driver down.

£2300 for a small 1.3L ford fiesta with only 29k miles, named driver, 3rd party fire/theft. The car itself is being sold for £795, the quote is about 3x the cost of the car. When I get a full time job sure it will be less of a problem but full time jobs are hard to come by atm .

I am filling out these forms wrong or something , this is ridiculous.

EDIT: To sum things up, going direct to specialist young drivers insurance is best bet. These guys look pretty good https://www.hertsinsurance.com/youngdrivers.php

Try insuring a bigger like a mondeo or focus too. See what the prices come out at.

If a 1.3 Fiesta is over £2k I will be amazed if a Mondeo is cheaper from the same insurers giving £2k quotes for Fiestas. I know how the theory works but I really think its a bit of a myth. He may find the Mondeo wont be a huge amount more to insure, but much less?

Do a tad more research than just using Confused.com. It really isnt that great.

Contact insurers directly.

This is the way forward.

I did a quote on confused for my son yesterday 2900 quid from Admiral was the best.

He phoned them today 1800 quid.

True, could be worth 5 mins though just in case. I think it is a myth.

I guess some of the smaller cars like the fiesta's are considered good first time cars and thus may be a little more to insure.

All in all it is a lottery. I can insure a mustang v8 for $300 dollars a year more than I pay for a 2l auto focus. :(

I feel sorry for dudes who just passed
My fiesta 1.25 was 1500 but I remember people 2 years older than me had saxo vtss etc for first cars

I'm 20 with nearly.3 years driving

Well just did a £1400 Ford Mondeo 2L, 5 doors. Same conditions as above. Comes out at 2.8k with Admiral, impressive when compared. But obviously I need cheap cheap, I'll give Direct Line a try I suppose.

Makes me cringe when my parents say there New ford Mondeo 2.5L or w/e costs a couple hundred to insure. Takes the biscuit and they say it's expensive to run pahhhh!

Looks like I will just haveto hold off until I get a full time job. :( So frustrating I really do love driving about, gives you some freedom and I hate being the last person to get things!

Stop getting quotes from insurers who like to deal with low risk clients. All you have to do is search on Google for young driver specialists and spend an afternoon on the phone.

£1200 for a Fiesta in my first year of driving (about 9 years ago) so guessing it would be more than that if I did it now?

Add one of your parents as a named driver as well - can bring it down a touch.

People always say that, but insurance isn't just about covering the cost of your car, it's about covering the cost of any damage you do to property/people.

Yeah true, I'm not thinking about what 3rd party means here :p. Infact it doesn't take into account damage of my car at all so yeah my bad. Still pricey as hell, no thanks to boy racers I guess.

At age 25 I insured my 206 GTI, TPFT, on a provisional license whilst I learned to drive for £1600.
Now aged 26, 1 years no claims, passed my test and have just insured my car for £1800, fully comp from Aviva. Every other insurer was coming back with ridiculous quotes of £2400+, not that £1800 isn't ridiculous mind you. TPFT quotes were all £3000+
Insurance scams are rife in my area but adding my old man as a named driver was knocking anything upto £500 off quotes.
I feel quite stupid, being almost 27 and having to add parents to my policy to bring quotes down.

My insurance went somthing like this £1500 (17),1200,800,Fully Comp >> 580,380,350 took a long time :( im now on £350 Fully comp with protected ncb, for a Rover 214. But the first few years were killer

Sky insurance, Adrian Flux, Chris Knott, Premium Choice and Academy Insurance to name a few.

Well the first 3 aren't going to touch him at 20, and they specialize in performance cars.

Did you know Chris Knott have changed the min age from 25 to 30.
