Not sure which version to get for new build (based around an Intel i3 CPU). Is it worth getting the 64-bit version? How will this effect the software I run on it? Will it have to be 64-bit compatible to work?! As you can tell I'm pretty confused over the whole but thing!! Cheers ;)

Get it!!!!

If you ever go above 2.75gb of ram you'll need it.

There are no compatibility issues any more with 64 bit, you'll be fine.

Don't hesitate, 64 bit is the way forward.

64 is double 32 so it must be better. ;)

No seriously, I have Win7 64 and have encountered no problems at all with it.

Coming from XP, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Yes!

Be crazy to have less than 4GB of RAM these days, surely?

Not strictly true! However, unless you have some older/crappy printers or peripherals you wish to use you might have to buy new ones! :p

Most 32-bit software will run fine on 64bit Windows.

Don't hesitate, 64 bit is the way forward.

It was the way forward years ago! :D

There are NO good reasons not to get 64 bit, just NONE

Compatability is a perfectly acceptable justification if replacing hardware/software or running a VM is out of the question. Can't see a home user being in this situation though.

x64 running perfectly since spring 2008.

The ONLY program that i had issues with was a windows 95 game that couldnt run (star wars dark forces 2 jedi knight *** :D)

EDIT:
Oh yeah, and i managed to get it working anyway, so i have literally no issue transitioning over. Might be worth makign sure you have at least 4gb of ram also.

I've been using 64 bit since vista was released. Never had a problem.

(well none that I couldn't fix :p)

Moved from 32bit Vista to 64bit Windows 7. And I'm liking it very much. Seems so much better, and quicker. It's really nice tbh.

I bought 64 bit XP in 2005, that was a mistake as there was pretty much 0 driver support for anything other than the motherboard and graphics card. However, since Vista hardware companies have pulled their finger out and I wouldnt ever consider using anything but 64bit.

Compatibility seems much improved on Windows 7. Not encountered any major problem nor issue since moving from 32bit Vista on 2 machines. I have 2 old printers with no latest drivers from the manufacturer but Windows 7 quickly found some online. Besides my 4GB RAM is now fully utilised

Just upgraded from Vista to in win 7 64bit. Could never feel and noticable speed increase from xp to vista, but the difference is very noticeable now I'm using win 7.

Not sure how to describe it, but everything looks and feels a lot 'snappier' - esp. starting up and shutting down.

Heck I was one of the few people who adopted Vista x64 in the first instance and it was flawless back then :p

You get the 64bit and 32bit discs in the same box..... you can decide which one to install.

As for 64bit v 32bit? 64 bit.

yeah me too
i had vista 64bit from march 07
i put it on my HP laptop and the only thing that didn't work was the webcam, but a few weeks and even that was working.
moved to win 7 beta as soon as it was available also

Only trouble i've had with 64-bit windows has been running old 16-bit programs (due to the drop in support in x64 windows). Otherwise, would definitely recommend it :)
