Does this quote for wheel bearings (parts/labour) sound right?

Car is a Nissan 350z

Parent's started noticing an odd noise after driving for a while and when turning. Turns out it's the wheel bearings, both sides at the front of the car.

They take it to an indy and were just quoted for parts and labour £1000.

Does that sound right?

Surely not.

Wheel bearings usually are quite cheap, but being somewhat quick and Jap, they could cost a bit more than usual.

Go get some more quotes, ask to have them itemised.

£70 for a brand new front hub on my MX5, I can't see a wheel bearing being much more than £100 each and as far as labor goes, it's only a step or two after changing brakes so no more than a 3/4 hours for a competent garage if that.

I would be shopping around!

Labour is normally between £85 - £100 per hour plus VAT
Not hour how long a wheel bearing takes to change on a 350z !

Nissan dealer saying £307 per hub (not including VAT) then labour on top.

I think I've found the part though for £195 inc VAT, but can't be sure?

your first problem is that your using a nissan dealer who will usually charge labour rates of £100 an hour or more

You want to be going to a backstreet garage and let them source for a local supplier.

Get ringing round.

The indy my parents use quoted £1000, they phoned Nissan and they quoted pretty much the same price.

I've found the part for £195 here:

We have someone who can do the labour fairly cheaply too. (relative owns a haulage company / has mechanics)

Good idea, take a 350z to a back street place, I imagine they work on them all the time.

you would be surprised at some back street places.

for example one i know of is run part time by a pair of renault mastertechs who spend their days in a main dealer and evenings and weekends in their own place if you were up here i could also point you in the direction of a recently opened indy started by a man who's just left a nissan maindealer after 10 years to go it alone all depends on how well you know your indys locally and their personal experience

My advice would be to ask on a 350Z forum and find a recommended supplier through them and get the parts fitted as and when. For both to need doing it's probably a common failure so worth a look around. Check if the brakes need doing too as you might as well save labor by doing them at the same time.

It shouldn't much more than £500 considering the evident cost of the hubs IMO unless it's got some exotic way of being fitted.

Once you've replaces one hub you've replaced them all, its hardly a complex car and he's not talking about taking the engine out, its a simple job.

Back street garages and recognised independent specialists in a marque are not quite the same thing.

i'm just pointing out you shouldnt judge a book by its cover.

for example

i could stick a 350z into a nissan main dealer and they would hand it to the apprentice to do who has a couple of months experience.

i could stick it into a back steet garage run by a qualified type with plenty of experience. and in the case of one i know a former nissan hitec.

if you were a 350z owner in possession of those facts what would you choose and that is without looking at cost

This is a proper back street garage: http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&l...=Z_uBDXIE0_LEgzQ9DC7txA&cbp=12,75.79,,0,12.51

I use them because my cars are old and not very complex, handy for the dirty work I CBA to do. I wouldn't let them do a cambelt change but you can't go wrong with CV gaitors and rear drums... However places like this don't really look after your car and I wouldn't be sending a 350Z there. A good independent garage yes, Radek the ex tractor mechanic, no.
