Man imprisoned for not giving police password.

Most high up departments do not use these kind of public ciphers especially for classified stuff, they use in house stuff. i.e Private and Public. But yer, still safe and there is most likely not any serious known 'back doors'.

If you look in suite B you will see AES listed as the cipher used. :p

Laws mandating the handing over of passwords are no different to laws permitting warranted searches (which you can also be jailed for obstructing).

As long as there is reasonable grounds to request the password in the first place, I have no problem with this part of the law, and can't really see why anyone else would either.

This law is completely different to a warrant. Citizens should have no duty to assist the police in any investigation and furthermore this law violates the right to silence and requires no mens rea.

For those interested, truecrypt is free full disk encryption software offering full disk encryption using the AES-Twofish-Serpent 256-bit ciphers, as well as hidden partions for plausible deniability. Password is entered on bootup.

Interesting thread, good read :D

What are the ramifications for the user if you encrypt your hard drive? Do you have to enter the password every time you wish to access it?

depends on the software, most will require a boot password, without the password you cannot access anything..

remove the drive and put it in another system and you see nothing at all, or maybe an empty volume

It's clear he has weighed up the likely sentence for the RIPA contravention against the consequences of the data being decrypted and decided that he is likely to get off lighter going down the route he did. He will have had legal advice, so I very much doubt it was a hacked copy of a game and some ripped CDs.

As always there will be a lot more to this case than what's in the papers.

Good for him, I'd do the exact same thing. I quite like having my privacy and freedom, thank you very much.

my mates credit card was cloned and used to TRY and buy access to a legit porn site, however the payment channel used is some times used by people paying to access kid porn.

DEspite the transaction being blocked by the bank and him canceling the card, that was evidence enough to take his PC.

he was told the PC was going to be taken but knew (thought) there was nothing suspect on it.

cost him 20k had to move out of the area, spent months in and out of court, lost his job, and the papers published he was a pedo..

nothing to hide? if any 1 picture in your internet cache looks to be of an underage girl in some sort of sexual pose YOU MUST prove by getting her birth cert she is over age... otherwise YOU are guilty of creating that picture.

I would recomend anyone who browses ANY PORN or ANY SITE that shows port site ads REGUARLY clear their cache and ERASE the free space on their drive...

and if you hear your machine is going to be looked at (for any reason) ERASE IT and destroy the drive (i am paranoid I dont trust the erase program not to jsut encrypt the data)

if my mate had been a pedo he would ahve been fine as he would have erased the drive (as he knew they were going to take it and he works in IT)

Bit ott!
If I were that paanoid I'd disconnect all my hard drives and boot from a Linux Live CD, then browse through Tor, no traceability whatsoever.

I'd prefer not to have to live in fear of some moron charging me for viewing a public site though

Porn isn't illegal.

I think what he means though is if there is an advert on a legal site that stays in your cache and they look underage then the onus is on you to prove they're not.

Surely the site in question would be the ones in trouble, unless you click-through and they're obviously under rage? Illegal images aren't exactly advertised in banners anyway.

Sorry yer that's what I meant, suite A / private being where it wouldn't be used for the uber sensitive stuff. Still I suppose the fact it's sanctioned at all means there is some serious trust in it.

I wouldn't imagine they would use Suite A alone though in any application where security was the most important factor, as opposed to the ability to encrypt very quickly or for a field agent to remember the cipher, it's very risky to use ciphers not publicly tested.

Bestiality is, which you'll come across quite often on places like 4chan and ED. Don't forget the "extreme" (victimless) pornography that was made illegal.

We really need a 5th amendment :(

Although if you where to put a true crypt archive on someone's pc and say you saw some dodgy pics on tier computer while they where out of the room they'd never be able to give the pw.

nope if the image is on your PC its your problem... the site (i believe) sent conformation the girls were over age via their legal rep to the court, however this was not proof enough and he had to hire a PI to track them down and pay 2k for each cert... + fees etc etc...

It's not down to the accused to prove they're over 18. If there's contention, it's up to the jury to decided based on the pictures and any other supportive evidence (such as legal representations). But the prosecution always err on the side of caution anyway.
