After a while out of work I managed to get a job as a field engineer with NCR. 4 weeks training then I'll be installing and maintaining epos machines in the retail sector. Not my ideal job but things in my local area are pretty bleak so a permanent job is more than welcome.

Just wondering if anyone has worked for NCR before?

I work for Teradata, which used to be a division of NCR before being spun off 3 years ago. I'm not in the same line of work as you will be covering, so can't comment on the job itself, however it's a typical large US-led company so expects commitment and hard work, but (in my experience) treats it employees pretty well. NCR are doing strong business in the retail POS market (lots of growth coming in self-checkout) so you should be in a secure job with reasonable prospects if you are prepared to work and make an impression.

Yeah that's precisely my main area of work, installing those self-service machines in the likes of Tescos and Sainsburys. I'll be the sole person covering my catchment area so I'll be kept busy I'd imagine.

Cheers for the reply.

Basically, you'll be the poor fool who is sent in to fix our tills :p
The software is godawful, completely random errors that you can't track down are pretty much a daily basis (We've had self-service machines randomly decide to give out the wrong change for no reason whatsoever), and to add to that, you get customers vandalising them, pouring coke into the vents............

Engineer or technician?

Still on this crusade? :p

You'll find the problem lays within the organisations themselves, not individuals trying to make their job seem important. The word engineer has been misused for decades, it's not going to stop any time soon...

lol, well I'll be installing ,diagnosing and fixing problems. So I personally would say technician but as long as the pay comes in the job title could be NCR Monkey for all I care.

Interesting, what do you do there? Worked with a fair few Teradata chaps in my time..

Used to work for them . American company so work you hard . if yer doing fastlane your call planners are based in scotland (some good some really bad) .

Normal guys money was abit meh .. The blackberrys are a real pain and the vans are murder (only had one a week while the sorted my car ) . The new model fastlanes are great but the model thats in most of the shops atm and the older one are a nightmare to work on and the software is a real chore (nearly 4 hrs to reimage and set it up) .

Most of the field guys are ok and support aint bad .. But few lazy guys who spoil it for everyone . There really hot on parts (but the parts managment is a real pain) .

If you have any questions feel free to ask

I'm a Financial Services Industry Consultant covering EMEA (Europe Middle East & Africa). My role is a good split between pre-sales and post-sales/billable consulting work, with focus on Finance , Risk and Profitability Analytics, but I cover lots of other topics as well (e.g. Data Warehouse Governance, Logical Data Modelling, BI Strategy etc.).

Hard work, and quite a bit of travel involved in my role, but Teradata are a pretty good company to work for. It's also nice to work for a company which is right at the top of its chosen field (large-scale enterprise data warehousing) and is continuing to be successful and grow even through the recession.

Appreciated, sent a few questions via trust.

NCR are a bunch of ****s.

My dad worked for them from the age of 20, and one year before retirement (looking to great an understandably large pension package) get's made redundant and only gets 10% of what he would have.

He worked there his entire bloody life FFS!

This is in the South Africa division.
