Suitable dogs with young children

Just got back from a mate's house where they have a Staffordshire bull terrier cross. It's fine with their kids and ours, including our 1 year old. The key thing is that they have gone to the trouble of training it properly and they actually keep an eye on it when the kids are around.

We've recently got a Cocker Spaniel puppy, he's great around my little brother and seems more scared of the cat than the cat does of him :)

Another vote for Spaniels - incredible dogs, so loyal, amazing to train, very affectionate and brilliant with kids - never seen any aggressive behaviour with the 8 or so I know

Can't emphasise the above enough. Cocker Spaniels are the friendliest breed in the world, always love to play, and will never give you any grief beyond possibly giving the odd rogue slipper a little chew (which can be averted with proper training). Perfect dog for little kids in every way.

There aint one.

They all bring in crap from out side on the floors your kids will be crawling around on.

This.

Can't you wait a few years until your kid is bigger and a bit more robust? Think of the child.

To quote Alan Partridge "There's some terrible statistics" about dogs and small children.

They're still animals, gotta say if it was my kid I'd wait until he/she was at least 8 or 9. So then he knows not to tease the animal, and plus he's old enough to scoop poop.

German Shepherd's are good for round kids. People jump to conclusions as they are used for guard dogs or police dogs but they are very laid back and easy going.... Grew up with between 2 and 7 of them since I was 0.

As said before, they tend to see kids as their own young so guard them pretty effectively...

I have an English Bull terrier.

Both mine have sat on his back, pulled his tail, and lobbed things at him, and all he does is wag his tail or walks away.

Thats probably the worst age if you as kme, all the people I know who got dogs when their children were that age regretted it, the child hasnt grown up with the dog so think its a new toy and doesnt know their strength and ends up hurting it.

Had problems with that my self with the ex's 2 kids

Labrador Collie cross. Beautiful dogs. Our garden is small and all he does is lie in the garden in the sun except when he wants to play. very calm unless you get a teddy bear for him :P

My parents have had one since before I was born. Apparently he was my best buddy when I was 3 :)

Photo! I am intrigued

My mate had one of these and was one of the best dogs ever.

One more vote for a spaniel, my cocker is the perfect family dog, very friendly, active when we play with him, very relaxed around the house when left to his own devices.

You might not believe it but Staffy's are good with kids. My parents had them when I was growing up and they were very tolerant. The've had a bad rap recently but thats due to d*ckheads breeding them as fighters with not much human contact.
In fact, I believe Pitbulls were called 'Nanny dogs' because they were great with kids, just not other dogs!
Oh, and the first dog they had was a German Shepard, I put that through hell as a toddler and never got so much as a snap.

Well said. It's often the child that's the problem, poking and pulling on the dog causing it to act in a way it never would with adults (ie people who treat it properly).

No, then the owners are still the problem because they haven't taught the dog he cannot do that. Poking and pulling a dog resulting in the dog biting means it's not been brought up well, the owners are not being dominant enough then.
