Anyone excited for windows phone 7?

You would think that HD7 be the same spec as the DHD with both being released at same time almost, but the HD7 uses the old snapdragon found on the desire, nexus one, evo etc and 200mb less ram than the DHD. Its not looking to good for the HD7

Looks like i be keeping my preorder for DHD then.

If you want internet features (and a whole range of other things when you are out and about) you need a smartphone.

It can be easily justified, just in the same way a more expensive car can be justified compared to an old banger.

I have an old banger :)

I doubt many ppl 'need' internet features - it's still there when you get home!

That is absolutely no justification for not getting one though, you could apply the same logic to any 'luxury' item that you own.

If you cant afford a nice phone, dont get one, but dont make silly excuses :p

The more I look at this, its just basically an iPhone made by Microsoft, it has almost all the same sort of limitations in place, with the added bonus of better social integration and the Xbox stuff.

...add the poor battery performance of top end androids. Maybe the internal MS memo got mixed up and said "Take the worst features of iOS and Andriod to create WP7" :D

* No memory card support - Def a miss, and an odd one at that... Maybe it'll follow on later hardware?

MS are pushing 25GB online storage via skydrive (The only positive I can see with WP7 atm) hence the lower internal GB of the phones too...

Damn, the internet browser looks terrible in this vid, also you'd think they'd sort out sense for launch.

I've used PAYG for ever, I spent less than a tenner a month. Completely can't justify smartphones - and I bet most smartphone owners can't justify it either!

Internet access on the go, google maps, satnav, etc.
Useful for music and even video (don't need to remember to pack an mp3 player)
Always have a camera on me should I need it
Can use SSH and even remote desktop on my phone to admin servers and so on as needed
Task scheduler, alarms, etc.
Can view and edit documents, spreadsheets, etc. in common formats on the go without needing a laptop.

OK some features are available on non-smartphones too but the whole package counts as well.

couldn't MS just have found a happy medium?

they have gone from one extreme (being able to do everything in a crap way in WM6) to being able to do a few things well (1st generation iphone).

Hardware looks interesting. LG Quantum and HTC HD7 Pro especially.
WP7 looks uninspiring at the moment

Will give it a go though. Still yet to find a phone to replace my ancient O2 Exec. I need a good hardware keyboard. I was interested in the Galaxy S Pro, but for whatever reason the interesting phones never seem to appear in the UK.

What worries me about Windows Phone 7 as a developer is its reliance on Silverlight for most applications. Silverlight will make writing fart apps incredibly easy but more complex apps very hard.

Apparently Microsoft are letting a select number of companies use the native APIs but I can only see that annoying the rest of the community.

Are you saying this as someone who has Silverlight experience?

I find writing Silverlight apps (complex to easy) is an absolute joy!

I think we can't forget who the general public are. We are not your every day users. We like to tinker, we enjoy the limited e-peen you get from having a modified device, even if post modification you don't do anything with it, it's still Jailbroken and UR A REBBL!!

Honestly I think that MS have gone down the correct path with this device. It has an extremely smooth and simplified UI. Now this doesn't seem like the ideal solution for us. We can't hack it, mod it, change it to be individuals. But this was the beauty of the Apple OS. It was clean, basic and ultimately utilitarian. The every day user just wants their phone to work, no faffing, limited set up and instant gratification.

Microsoft have something of a 'Tech stigma' bought about by years of dealing with mediocre products and half assed approaches to support and updates. Even among the techy now MS have somewhat redeemed their image with Windows 7 - which I personally believe is the superior desktop OS out there - even more so (dare I say it) than OSX. MS have the advantage now of seeing who the market leaders are, what their devices are capable of and ultimately what the end user wants. Undeniably the iPhone has been the final word with smart phones in the past 3-4 years.

Android has been the result of a backlash against Apples aggressive and money-centric marketing strategy. 'Everyone wants Apple product so we'll screw them for every bit of cash we can and whilst we're at it we'll take the service providers as well'. Basically if you treat someone like crap for long enough then eventually they'll wake up to it and look somewhere else. Google with the Android OS has provided this outlet. Lets be honest about the Android operating system. It works, on the right hardware it's actually pretty slick. In it's basic form it's not terribly pretty and again, if we're being honest, this is where Google excels - they take and idea and get it out there as quickly as possible in a working and usable form. Design gurus they are not. It has been left with the likes of HTC to work on the GUI and make it attractive and far more functional. There have been other iterations out there not the least being Sony Ericssons X10 - but as we all well know the more these things are modified the slower they are to be updated.

So I believe that Microsoft could actually be onto something with the Windows 7 Phone. It is designed to appeal to the average joe user that 'just wants it to work'.

This brings me to where I think it could fail. Microsoft's strong points have never been making something funky or design-centric unless you take the XBOX into account (however I think that XBOX is a brand solely aimed at a youth market). For them it has always been the enterprise potential of their products and this is reflected in their earnings. The vast percentage of Microsofts profits come from it's desktop and server side operating systems and tools. Their one major entertainment success has been in XBOX and that largely has been down to having the right 3rd party developers on-board and some cunning price points on the console.

So clearly MS has the Enterprise side of things down pat, but every recent foray into the mobile entertainment market has been met with at best indifference and at worst scorn. Zune - failed, Windows Mobile (outside of enterprise) - failed with a current 5% market share, Kin smart phones - failed, tablet PCs - failed, Web-TV - failed, MSN Music - Failed. The problem with the majority of these things is that there was a better and more functional offering out there. Whether it was Tivo, iPod, iPhone and more recently the iPad, there has always been something more desirable and ultimately more functional for the every day user. Where this could fail is not in that it's a Microsoft product, not that the operating system is lacking, and not in the pricing but in it's desirability. When presented with a selection of phone and mobile operating systems, will the average joe go for a stock looking touch phone with a slightly flashy OS? That's the hard question with an even harder answer in my opinion. The possible saving grace? Android has proven that people are ready for something different and the risk to Android? Windows 7 Phone may just be that bit more polished, that little more pretty and have the right element of 'it just works'.

Some, yes. I've been playing with the SDK over the past couple of days. With the Apple app store so saturated, I think there's an opportunity to win fame and fortune on WP7. ;)

I think it says a lot that Microsoft's own applications (and some third party apps like Spotify) aren't written in Silverlight.

Does that mean spotify will multi task on wp7?

wall of interesting text

I actually agree whole-heartedly. MS has gone after the growth sector. Alienating users like myself (Winmo since 2003) will not exactly harm them long term, as we were/are a niche outside of the business users.

So, whilst it might peeve a few enthusiasts, its likely to open MS up to the everyday "Just make sure it works" users. Perhaps the OS just finally "grew up"?

I am going to see if i can get my hands on a device in a store to have a fiddle with, just to make sure i can form an informed opinion. I am actually a certified "Windows Phone Expert", and still have yet to get my hands on a relevant device!

Perhaps a few months down the line, there will be apps/hacks available to bring back tethering, and the promised updates for multi-tasking/copy-paste. Then it will be worth me looking at it for my phone.

Untill then, looks like I might well be going for the next top notch android phone, on an HTC platform.

Ive been away from a computer for a couple of days but have managed to catch a little of engadgets info. First off ther are some nice looking devices, especially the HD7. Problem is if its really the HD2 in new clothing then that really is bad. I'd love to play with WP7 (love the design) but the fact the HD7 so poor hardware wise and is now an exclusive on O2 for a ripoff amount really puts me off. Especially when you add the lack of bluetooth, tethering and mass storage!

Ill look into it a bit more but I think it just too much, I may have to settle for the Desire HD or maybe pick up a HD2 (which imo is nicer looking) and run wm6 and android on it and then hope for WP to be ported over...
