Just seen this on a popular social networking site.

I was on my way back to Chichester from Woking. From Haslemere to Fernhusrt I had been stuck behind a Peugeot 306 and another car who insisted on going 30mph no matter what the limit. Once we reached the A286 (a long straight of national speed limit road) I saw the opportunity to take over. The first car was easy enough but the Peugeot began to speed up as we were going downhill. A van appeared over the verge down the road so I knew I had to get past this car as there was no guarantee of getting back on the left side of the road if I slowed down. To avoid a head to head collision I swung the car back onto the left side but did so so quickly that my back began to slide left and I veered back to the right after the van had gone past. I turned left to try and regain control but this just caused the car to skid left and I began to travel sideways down the middle of the road. It wasn't too long before I began to roll. It felt like I rolled twice.

After inspecting the car it would seem that I rolled onto my right side, whilst doing a 180 spin then going back onto my wheels. The car ended the right way up and to my surprise I hadn't stalled. I then turned the car off and exited the car to wait for the ambulance. I right arm was injured but I'll live. The car on the other hand is gone for good. I very lucky to walk away from it all and to be honest it was a heck of an experience. Not one that I hope to do again though.

Time to go car shopping.

In all fairness to the lad he's not a boy racer, a chav or anything like that. He was head boy, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink and is always about giving people lifts home and whenever I've been in the car he's been totally safe.

Having said that I had a 1.2 Punto Mk2 and have no idea how someone could possible have rolled it.

Anyone have an opinions, funny stories, pictures of what they've done...

Lucky escape tbh (could have rolled into oncoming traffic), car seems to have held up quite well and no serious injuries.

At the risk of sounding like an internet keyboard wielding armchair expert, sounds like he over corrected twice when pulling in.

Which is what I did in mine, but I had to use the bank as a launch ramp to flip, even when I started going sideways at 70mph. I don't see how he managed to just tip it onto it's side (basically).

Anyone who calls an "overtake" a "take over" is a **** from the outset.

Doesn't sound too bright, anyone with half a brain would have just aborted the overtake (or indeed not began it in the first place when driving an underpowered bucket).

That looks nice...

On an unrelated note, Peerzy were you at Clapham Junction yesterday morning?

Looks like he crapped his pants :D

A lucky escape TBH

It doesnt matter what the engine and car is, its about the desicion made at the time and wether it was safe to make it in the given situation. Or would a larger capacity engine a couple more cylinders and a BMW badge have got him round safely in the same situation?

If it was safe to overtake it wouldn't matter what the car was.

The car isn't the real issue here, is it?

Takes a lot more space for it to be a "safe" overtake in a 1.2 punto compared to something with a decent amount of kick.

Of course it matters. One engine capable of (for example) 30-70 in 10 seconds, or another capable of 30-70 in 4 seconds, which is safer to perform an overtake with?

Clearly it wasn't safe, hence the accident.

You can't pull an overtake in a weak car unless you know you have the space to do so - so I'd say the car is an issue - it couldn't pull off the overtake quickly enough.

Sorry I didnt manage to read the bit where Fox and Paradigm were sat in the back of the car

OP, your mate needs a faster car and all over taking manouvers will then be safe

Personally i'd say the desicion to overtake was the issue, not the car

There are probably very few stretches of road where it is safe to perform a double overtake on a single carriageway in a 1.2 Punto.

This is going back a good few years.

My mate had a sudden blow out on a corner of a local A-road. This gave sudden oversteer which he corrected sending him back to the outside of the corner. The lack of steering control then led to an impact with the kerb followed by a dry stone wall which launched it into the air and tore the front of the car up as you can see. It ended up sliding to a halt on its roof. Fortunately he wasn't injured and no one else was involved (midnight).

Turned out some questionable individual had scored his (and another friends) tyre with a stanley knife.
