Hi all

Really thinking of downgrading now, at least for a few years untill my feet are firmly back on the ground.

Question is , what car to make it worth my while?

Currently have -

Clio Sport (2 Litre) and i have 4 years protected no claims, and i paid £400 for it at the beggining of this year, now i just did a quote for a clio 1.5 dci of the same year (2002) and the quote was the same , £400. so i am guessing my insurrance is going to go up next near, so i might wait for renewal time.

If i were to buy a cheap car now, what would you guys recomend?

what i want is -

Cheap to buy
Cheap to insure
Cheap on fuel
Cheap on tax

you get the idea, must be worth the while changeing cars, otherwise theres no point.

Is there a budget at all? As "cheap to buy" would entirely depend on your definition of "cheap".

How much is your car worth?

VW Polo for £500 to £1000 quite reliable for their age etc and would be in the price bracket to make the down grade worthwhile but the older the car the higher the chance of maintanance costs to keep you mobile meaning its a bit of a risk because worse case if you buy a bad car its going to eat into free'd up cash

Doesn't come much cheaper for running costs than one of these:

Without further details such as your preferred size of car and the type of journey (motorways or town driving) it's quite difficult to specify as there's simply so much choice given your budget of 3K.

You have to remember a Clio 172/182 (can't remember which one you have) is going to hold its value a bit better than your standard 1.3 hatchback.

I don't see the point in going even lower personally, you already have an 8 year old french hatchback worth £3k. Say you get a decent-ish car for £1.5k-£2k thats only giving you an extra £1k now, and once depreciation kicks and repair costs start kicking in that figure will go down a fair bit.

I do short journeys to work (non motor way) takes me about 10 - 15 mins a day

prefer a small car, but doesent matter if a bigger car is going to cost less (but i doubt it)

That's not really that much is it? Most people use more than that.

I can't see how this will save a meaningful amount of money.

That is what i am trying to find out, IS it going to be worthwhile buying another car..

checked the TAX, it is £110 a year, so looked up the disel one in comparison, thats £30 a year
