So, I bought this game on release but never really gave it a fair shot due to just being blindly addicted to UO. Its possible I never even actually installed it, I honestly cant remember. So, yesterday I picked up the free 14 day trial out of curiosity.. And it turns out, I'm really enjoying it. But, with it being such an old game and me starting so late, I have a few concerns I was wondering if current/old players could answer for me.. As I can't seem to find any more specific, and active, forums.

1. Is there any point? Am I just going to be woefully behind and not be of any use to any decent guild etc that might be after new meat for the Frontiers?

2. Is the end game still active?

3. I am joining the game for PVP, first and foremost. However, because I have been brain washed by modern MMO's I also like to have some sort of gear progression, is there any at end level? Granted, this is a tricky one - I hate item based PvP, but I want some sort of end game progression besides realm points etc..

4. I am on the huge Ywain cluster of servers at the moment, I am guessing that is my best bet?

5. Anyone else playing it want to kill stuff? :D

as far as im aware this game is dead and burried.

That server cluster may well be populated now, isnt it the last hope and bastion of people still playing?

The game has had about 5 expansions since i stopped but its become a real whos got what loot and relics now = win. I cant imagine there is any new blood in the game just Incredibly high RR players and their alts that are power leveld up to oblivion.

Well, yeah - That was my concern. It seems far from dead though, I have met people everywhere I have been.. Been killed, killed, partied with etc.

How much of a gap is the gear going to be at max level? I don't mind working for it in some capacity, but atm I don't even know if its really possible.

1. In my view DAOC has had it's days, then again i played it an awful lot so i am tired of it but as for a new player it can be fun especially on the new Ywain cluster due to many players.I would suggest trying to get into a guild, keep grouping with people to do dungeons/level with and try some battlegrounds whilst leveling to keep entertained. The class trainers gave quests which gave decent rewards and might be worth doing still whilst leveling.

2. I heard it is, people i used to play with regular ingame say Ywain PVP is very hectic and fun but DAOC doesn't have much PVE side of it however the PVP side is the best i've seen in a mmorpg.

3. Although i haven't played for a while there's a craftskill called Spellcrafting which in my view highly changed the PVP in the game, you can create your own layout of stats/ability bonuses with various items and cut gems inserted into armour combos.Your spellcrafted set would be better of course depending on what utility your items have other than your armour but these items can be rare/hard to obtain like from Caer Sidhe which was a raid instance when i played.

4. Yep as Euro servers are dead sadly though all Euro players who resubbed went to Ywain basically.

5. If i ever get time i might log in on Ywain just got a heap of games to play through. :)

One thing in mind though i've not tried the lastest 3 or so expansions which changed the game a lot, i guess it's worth a punt to try the game out for a month and see how you feel.

I honeslty couldnt say now, but the difference between rr1 and rr 10 was immense.

They had Relic? equipment that was like the best best for the item slot and without that you would be under geared compared to the top chaps.

It may have all changed tbh ill shut up :O

Play on ywain servers, they are nicely populated and the lag isnt too bad in the UK. I stopped playing in July, but only because i sold my PC and moved here. I didnt really bother with PVE i played mainly for the pvp. You'll find lots of action still, you can easily farm glass for items for the end game stuff.
Crafting is far easier now, i just made an alchemist for potions since i didnt have a buffbott. If you join a guild you'll get buffed anyways.
If you do the tutorial it will take you to about lvl 12 give you about 15 gold and some kit and a horse.

also when you get your chara to lvl 20 get to the battleground ( thidranki ) and learn how the pvp works. once you hit lvl 24 do the comand /xp off and do /rp off before you get 750 realm points. Spend some time here and the tactics and skills you learn will help you when you do the end game rvr.

Thanks for your replies. I just read a re-review of DAOC done in May this year, they still rate it pretty highly.. And to be honest, I'm enjoying it - So I'm going to give it a shot.

I'm finding it very hard to find information on gearing up, dungeons, instances, etc. though.. Does anybody know a decent site? Currently running around with Aurulite gear at around level 20, which is fine for now.. But I want to get some sort of idea of progression in my head, so I can find a guild and be useful in RvR asap.

what server and what realm are you ?
http://camelot.allakhazam.com/ is good for info on quest items and quest walk throughs.
http://www.camelotherald.com/news/index.php same with the offical herald got lots of info.
The PVP is more skill based than item based, theres only one way to learn that and thats just get into the action in thidranki and see how people play, what works and what doesnt.
Dont be afraid of getting killed in PVP, but dont be reckless at the same time.

I loved this game haven't played for a while always played on the US servers and was always fun.

Might have to dig my disks and find my account details and give it another go.

That video brings back a lot of good memories. First MMO I ever played and whilst it has had it's day it was a blast. Still the best PvP experience I have had in an MMO.

Thanks, will check out the links.

Im Albion on Ywain servers. Currently level 23.

oh noes, everytime someone mentions DAoC I'm tempted to dust off the rose tinted glass's.

Fancy rollng some PBAOE goodness in the form of an Ice Wiz or Spirit Master.....soooooo tempting :P

The thing that killed DAoC for me was when you're level 20 or so and you're playing in the battlefields up until level 30... you struggle to kill the higher level players until you get to 29 and then as soon as you hit 30 you're thrown into an abandoned battlefield and all the fun disappeared as level 30+ was desolate :(

That's been resolved now as battlegrounds are every 5 levels now, though you do still get bgs which are more active than others. My favourite was the pvp in darkness falls which was immense at times :)

Im actually a fire one atm.. Someone mentioned "ice for pbaoe" earlier, what does that mean?

point blank area of effect,

basically you do a very powerful spell which radiates out from you. Closer the enemy is to you the more damage it does. If you're guarded by a shield user or have SM pet or someone else has all the aggro of the mobs, it is a easy way of leveling quickly in a group.

you should have a nice powerful fireball bolt though. you should be able to 2 shot other mages with it.

also since your albion, watch for Ceris the thurg in thidranki, he has some good tactics which he uses and you can learn a lot from him.
You also want your AOE root spell on your hotbar next to quick cast. If you end up in melee, quick cast that then run to long range and firebolt them.

The best way to learn is to just see what works dont be afraid of getting killed, you'll see a lot of people who just stay back like scaredy cats, you can take advantage of them really easy.
