Civilization V

I can't understand why we only get a certain limit of resources per resource location, certainly makes an army of horsemen, or knights hard to do Q.Q They have discovered our weak spots! :p

I like it. Adds a different dimension to the game and an element of realism. Going to war over resources as well as different nations having more of it than others seems like a good thing to me.

It means you have to plan more carefully, if you don't have it then you to find some means of acquiring it, or live without it :)

Agree on that point - I went to war with Arabia as they had huge oil reserves just over the border from me - I mean four or five tiles within ten hexes of one another, the closest only five or six hexes form my border - and I had none :D

Going very well for me so far this time around...

Huge Earth Map
Emperor Difficulty
Epic game length
Random Civ (I got Germany)
Random Leader Personalities
No Start Bias

Managed to get control of all of South America, now I am turning it into a giant defensive island :D (I looooove Culture Bombs :) )

Not sure why you think that, I have already had to repel both India and Persia (twice) from seaborne invasions, one on my east coast (India) and twice from the north (Persia)
What do you call an invasion? 1 or 2 units?

All I see is the AI keep building units on their islands unable or unwilling to try any kind of sea faring. Judging by the forums on civfanatics everyone else is finding the same thing.

Yeah its only been a few units, nothing major scale, but it at least shows that the AI is not incapable of doing it, mind you as we've already assessed earlier in this thread regarding the AI not attacking/defending in size yet mine does, it would appear I have the only working copy of Civ 5 in the country :D

I'm fairly happy with it being a rarity though, historically speaking we can count the number of large scale cross-ocean invasions on the fingers of one hand and it does make my sexy continent nice and defensible. Now if only I got a risk style bonus for owning a continent :D

I've never played on anything less than Emperor difficulty so I couldnt say for certain if they dont on lower levels.

Last game i played i spent the 1st 5600 years starting in china on a earth map, waiting for someone to attack me, defend with ranged to intercept until their army started to thin, then push them back taking 2 cities or so then wait for the ridiculous peace offer (ie here's 5 more cities) Done this against 4 civilizations in the end. The only nation that kept causing me problems were Bismark's Germany, They ended up controlling all of Africa and Europe.

I will be staying off the larger maps for now until the next patch where Firaxis are going to fix an issue people are having with getting stuck at a certain city count causing games to crash out.

See thats another thing, I have never had any AI yet offer me a bunch of cities in order to get peace. In my previous game, even when I had whittled down the civ I was at war with to his last two cities, having already taken his capital and 6 other cities he still didnt offer me anything other than the standard 10 turn peace treaty. Didnt offer me gold or cities.

I know that some people have had it happen but I simply havent so I'm totally lost as to whats so different about my game.

I havent had the city count crash yet but from what I've read thats when a civ has 70 cities and as yet I havent had a game where a Civ has had that many cities so that would explain why I've not encountered that one. Even on my game up there I myself only have around 15 cities so dont think I will reach 70 in this game.

@ Kainz, yeah if you play with a domination/military leaning the game can take ageeees!

I've just run into a problem :(, I am playing a huge earth map game, i'm up to 2010 so not far to go... but their is a known bug which screws the game up when you get too many cities (65 or 70) where you reach a kind of cap, you can continue playing but not take any cities, if you do the game crashes and it is even possible to corrupt the save game (I think I corrupted mine just by reloading loads of times to see if I could proceed).

Firaxis say they have fixed the issue and it will be in the next patch, but as it is I can't finish this game until the patch and I have around 20 hours invested in it :(... I may not even be able to play it when the patch comes as the save may now be irresversibly corrupted :(

i have had this as well. yeah its a 70 city limit inc. puppets.
i am trigger happy :p and always go for a domination victory.
i have even tried razing a couple of the smaller cities, but still no difference.
now i am stuck playing on small maps :( this problem doesnt happen on small maps.

I've spent several days on an Epic small continents game and most importantly got a rich and very strategically appealing starting area. For once my economy wasn't an issue, I teched and wondered steadily and was in a good position. I was having a nice cold war with neighbour Alexander too. Things seemed to be on the up...

Trouble was by the time the twentieth century was well under way most nations were hugely in the red, many didn't know about the other civs in the game, I knew barely half the world (and had no desire to find out about the rest) and for fifty years I did nothing but press next turn while trying to go through the miserable process of keeping my empire happy.

Eventually I got really bored and was more than happy when my friend Catherine, simply turned on me and declared war. I thought we had been friends... Eventually Alexander weighed in and after several of my cities fell (too easily in my opinion) I thought sod it and gave up.

I've given it time, but I still haven't got passed my initial negative demo opinions. I would like the following in a patch, just to make things a touch less disagreeable.

Map trading.
Unit name editing.
A smaller Interface. Especially on the right hand side.
The ability to know where I stand diplomatically, at a glance.
Stop being pestered by the AI for things I've already said "no" to a dozen times.
Naval action and useful AI amphibious invasions.
More variety in the leader dialogue.
For such a touted feature, it don't 'arf get tedious fast.

Perhaps unsurprisingly considering my lack of issues with the game , i am thoroughly enjoying it and am happy with it. Would like a fix for the 70 city bug but other than that happy. Just waiting for some of the great civ 4 mods to be done in civ 5 and all sorted :)

Unit name editing.

Hi mate, pretty sure you can name units, only when they receive a promotion though.

Have to say I agree with most of your other points, the main thing I find annoying is the AIs lack of naval awareness / strategy, why does this feature always seem to get messed up?

The total war series is the same, no naval threat whatsoever. It is disappointing, I think it would add a lot to these type of games.

TBH the modding community are doing a better job at providing fixes (by way of mods) than firaxis are, lots of little mods to iron out the annoying things you have noted.

Saw an interesting mod with an extra 50 techs and new wonders, have downloaded and looked at the tech tree but not had time to play it yet.

The relative ease of modding this game is great, i spent ages trying to get rhyes and fall to work on civ4

Downloading on steam as I type. I'm trying to expand my games, never really tried a turn based game before, but found the demo pretty fun. It's amazing how fast your time just disappears!
