Civilization V

Connecting your cities up with roads for trade? Building markets and using specialists in them? Improving resource tiles? Monitoring the dispersion of your civilians so that they are working the right tiles ? (leaving it on auto often doesnt pick the best selection in my experience, so I manage all my cities civilians myself), keeping building projects in line with your income?

I did not know you could use specialists in the buildings so thanks for the tip and will take a look this evening.

Yeah you can in certain buildings, if you go to the city screen you will see the specialised buildings listed on the right hand window and the number of "slots" for each building, you can take civilians off of working tiles and allocate them to those buildings for a boost in gold (in the case of markets etc), research (in the case of libraries and such) and so on.

Easy way to do it is to go into the city screen, expand the Citizen Allocation Focus in the top right, and click whichever focus you want. I just click through and watch the changes to the food, production, gold, science, and culture.

Yes I have been doing that - does this auto allocate specialists into the correct buildings ?

Anyone reached the peak of Civ5's performance?

I reached a plateau where no matter how much I turned down to the lowest settings, my game keeps crashing when the AI does their turns.

It started happening on a large map with 8 opponents, first time it occurred I scaled back the performance .... this seemed to have worked ... then I get it again, scaled performance down and it works for a bit more .... I keep doing this until everything is low and it kept crashing everytime now.

I'm on XP running DX9 with 1920x1200 resolution ..... even tried windowed mode at 1600x1050 with lowest settings and it still crashed!

Found out that saving games have a bug in-game where the save files get bloated. Eventually this slows down the game and leads to a crash. I'm going to wait till they can patch it before playing again:

I've been having a few issues late-game (up to the year 2025) with performance. Running on an i7 930 with 6gb RAM and a 5770, it can occasionally pause for over a minute, mid-turn, for no apparent reason. It's caused me to abandon my longest game - I do hope it's fixed soon, as I'd like to continue that game.

Performance issues seem quite common. I'm struggling on a q6600 with 4GB RAM. It's in between turns that takes the time for me and I'd say waits are up to 20-30 seconds. However I'm only mid 1900's at the minute.

Trouble with that method is that I have found from several days of testing that it actually doesnt select the best positions, I've found that I can pick food/gold etc on auto, but have always been able to get better selections by doing them myself.

Yeah, noticed that too. Sometimes another focus will give more food than the food focus, or more production than the production focus. When that happens I just assign the tiles myself.

Yeah, I've also noticed that the citizen focus system doesn't seem perfectly usable right now, so I stick to doing it manually (especially when I've annexed a city and I want to get a courthouse built ASAP!).

does the option for "always war" exist anymore? it's a right pita having to declare on everyone and have them constantly coming back asking for peace!

What's more annoying is when you get writing, immediately everyone asking for open borders. Then when you get philosophy, everyone asking for research agreements. Nearly every turn.

Haha I've got that bug. Saves are indeed getting slower and slower to load. I'll try deleting the chaff I don't need and start again.

Guys, I am presently playing my first ever Civ5 game as a noob. I first played through the tutorials, and then dived into my first full game as Queen Elizabeff!....and that was last Sunday!

I'm still playing the same ruddy game! After playing 2hrs each day, I am some 580 odd turns into it and am on the verge of wiping out the last two civ's on the map finally as I've just hit the space age.

Is it normal for games to last this long? I have no idea what game settings I am playing on either, but the map seems to consist of a lot of continents and civ's. I faced early trouble via Singapore knocking on my door but took them out. I then tried to take on Germany and got slaughtered - until I built battleships to bombard their cities from afar.

I quite enjoy the game and am hooked, but bugger me this first game has lasted for ages!

Yes it is normal. Civ is by no means a short game unless you abuse AI/Mechanics/Restarts to end the game quickly in the first 100 or 200 turns. Unless you're on the warpath constantly it will probably last a while, especially if you're spending time checking your cities and diplomacy and other things.

I lol'd at the pact of cooperation (or was it secrecy) in the demo. 1 turn i was suddenly approached by Alexander who had apparently had a falling out with Bismark and asked for a pact to seperate the vile scum. Immediately after accepting i was suddenly approached by Bismark who had apparently had a falling out with Alexander and asked for a pact to seperate the vile scum. Was quite amusing :p

@ Kainz, yeah if you play with a domination/military leaning the game can take ageeees!

I've just run into a problem :(, I am playing a huge earth map game, i'm up to 2010 so not far to go... but their is a known bug which screws the game up when you get too many cities (65 or 70) where you reach a kind of cap, you can continue playing but not take any cities, if you do the game crashes and it is even possible to corrupt the save game (I think I corrupted mine just by reloading loads of times to see if I could proceed).

Firaxis say they have fixed the issue and it will be in the next patch, but as it is I can't finish this game until the patch and I have around 20 hours invested in it :(... I may not even be able to play it when the patch comes as the save may now be irresversibly corrupted :(
