Has anyone got any experience of using this app, Game Booster. I saw it in the software sub-forum, and thought it may be handy for gaming on my netbook if it was any good. I just wanted some user feedback if possible.

Here's the link:

Thought I'd post here, as it's game related, sorry if wrong forum...

It might force some background apps to use a bit less ram or use less cpu power.
Either way, a netbook has a crap cpu with typically only 1gb ram and a abysmal graphics card - no app can fix that:p.

Netbooks are not for gaming.

My Point Of View Mobii ION begs to differ. I play Half Life, C&C Generals, RA2, Dawn of War, GTA Vice City, and more at full settings @ native res with no hassles, and also HL2 at about 30 FPS with a few tweaks.

Just wanted to know if this app would gain me a few more fps in more demanding games.

be careful of some apps like this as they can trigger bans on games like call of duty and other punkbuster games ;)

Sorry, all the replies are wrong here.
I recommended it in the other forum, and I use it all the time while gaming and video encoding.
It doesn't force programs to use less power, it physicaly shuts down processes not needed to run windows (like themes), it just frees up ram for other stuff, doesn't get you banned on any games/punkbuster etc and windows has never gave a BSOD because of it. On top of that you can customize exactly what processes it wants to shut down.
nearly 3 years I have used it and nothing bad has ever came out of it.
Try not to take advice from folk who are scared to try some thing new or haven't read up on what it actualy does. ;)
It is absolutley no different to shutting process down yourself via task manager. Plus you get a decent defrag tool if you choose to use it.

i used it when i had a crap comp if your struggling for memory on a laptop then sure it can help a lot especially with all the crap laptops generally have preinstalled

I personally wouldnt touch such a program.

Its like saying, no need to optimise your pc your self, leave it too us and we will sort it out for you!

Never!

Sort your pc out your self, get it in the best shape it can possibly be in and take it from there.

It may work, but your better of sorting pc out yor self.

lol i have seen bans on pb for progs exactly the same ;)

they arent bans they are kicks and i doubt they would even know gamebooster did anything because all it does is turn off unneeded windows services , changes windows apearance so its using less memory and then you can quit the program until you want to restore your windows settings

PB will even kick you for running FRAPS (atleast it did when i last played a PB game which was bf2

ALL OF YOU NEGATIVE POSTERS DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE PROGRAM IS....

Just disable the unneeded services yourself, it's not exactly rocket science. The service usually has a big long description telling you exactly what it does, and if it doesn't, just google it, you might find something you don't want on your PC and you'll be a bit wiser in the process.

Probably about as useful as those "RAM optimizers" or "56k boosters" you used to get. I.e. as good as a chocolate fireguard.

but its not because it doesnt try to optimise your cpu or memory it just shuts down a bunch of windows services that 90% of people dont need anyway and it turns some of the sparkly windows display options off for the desktop to free up some more memory.

its something you could do yourself but most people are comfortable doing so which makes the program a nice temporary option for those who need the extra bit of memory.

like my sons laptop only has 1gb of memory the os eats the majority of that so even hl2 is a bit slow unless you close down all of the uneeded programs first.

its not going to make a difference unless your computer is borderline spec for what you want to play anyway so its really only useful for laptops and notebooks

on my sons laptop it frees up about 200mb of memory which when he only has 1gb is a hell of a lot which otherwise would have been hogged by windows services for no reason at all

tbh honest on a modern rig with 4gb ram and a decent cpu these programmes make next to nothing difference i tested both the amd fusion and iobit one and the difference was so minuscule it was hardly worth bothering with .

on a laptop tho with a gig of ram it's a different story altogether and can be the difference between playing a game and not playing it at all

I've used GB in the past on a laptop trying to run FSX. Gave me about 2 FPS extra. One thing in GB's favour is that it makes it easy to temporarily disable services while you game and enable them again after with one click. Doing this manually via Control Panel each time seems masochistic to me.
