It is.

Update your Firefox and install the UK dictionary unless you like using Americanized spelling!

I have British English dictionary installed on 3.6.10 which I installed a while ago, I guess that's it, but you do have to install it, the english version anyway.

vonhelmet his sig says it all!:p

I think most people don't know and don't care.

It doesn't help that English is an incredibly stupid language, with no real structure or rules, particularly when it comes to spelling.

More to the case that we use yankie doodle dandy words instead of "Queens English" words.

Still our language offends you, but our benefits dont :D

I'd agree that it's quite difficult to use perfect grammar (in that some grammatical rules are unpredictable, archaic or just plainly bizarre), and obviously if you don't know how to spell a complicated word, chances are good that you will spell it incorrectly.

It's certainly not difficult, however, to make a passable attempt at doing these things correctly.

And here's a question tagged on: where the hell does "should have", "would have" come from, with "of" replacing the correct "have"? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

Very true.

I think the 'of' replacement comes from abbreviated speech: 'Would've', could've. Phonetically, it sounds like 'would have' and 'could have'.

It reminds me off the septic's mis-saying: 'I could care less' instead of 'I couldn't care less'...

Not really. Even long term British words don't follow any rules for their spelling and our grammar is pretty much non-existent - more of my whining on here is technically around punctuation, which isn't the same thing.

We're teaching our daughter to read at the moment, and she's learning things through phonetics. It's absurd though, as English words are not pronounced phonetically. They say that in Dutch, the notion of learning to spell words is absurd, as all words are spelt as they are said and vice versa. I know the same is true of Finnish, and probably plenty of other languages too.

Apostrophes, capitalisation, spelling...

And yeah, I care.

Using 'There' when it should be 'Their' or 'They're'.
I find it really annoying when people can't use these correctly.
I know my grammar, punctuation and spelling might not be the best but I don't think there is any excuse for mixing these up really.

It's not the spelling and grammar that gets me but the way postings are formatted. Even if one doesnt understand how paragraphs work, one should be able to see from other people's posts that separating blocks of text makes reading more comprehensible. And double negatives and split infinitives (sorry Star Trek fans) should be banned! (yes, I started the sentence with "And" deliberately)
