For those of you who can't spell or do grammar...

lol Aero or

This thread is filled with disappoint.

I don't know the origins of that but it's so annoying...

I love the irony in the title if I'm right, however I do not "use" grammar well, so could be barking way up the wrong tree. :)

Depends, we had grammar classes at primary school which would mean when going to that lesson, we would be going to "do" grammar. In the class, we would "use" grammar.

Stupid English.

I tend to use the forums to increase my ability to spell and make sure my grammar is correct. I used to be really bad but with the use of the build in spell checker and taking time to read through what I've typed I've improved vastly. It doesn't just aid my forum typing, it's helped with all areas where I have to write things, like assignments at uni.

I also use full or close to full grammar, spelling and punctuation when on IM clients, irc and when sending text messages. I don't care if it annoys others that they get a massive load of text, I'd rather that than some small piece of text that is barely understandable.

Ok OP if you werent having a dig at someone then you wouldnt have said at the start of your post that you werent having a dig! lol I take it I am one of the person or persons you are talking about. I have 2 A Levels and 6 GCSE so Im not thick... Im from Sunderland and have a bit of a mackem accent and sometimes i do write in the way I speak... Also If im writing emails, letters then do use the right Grammer! This is a forum to air views and i assume maybe to chat to people and have a laugh so im sorry but who actually cares about grammer on here lol :)

Leaving aside the bizarre point of view that all those who suggest that they are not having a dig at anyone are, in fact, having a dig at somebody, I just thought that I'd let you know that I care about grammar and spelling.

The whole point of having a standardised language is to enable everything that is said or written to be easily understood. It is not to look professional in your work emails or letters, but to be understandable and, this being the case, should therefore be used correctly whether you are emailing a client or posting casually on a forum. Obviously typos will come into play occasionally, which is unavoidable, but attempting to use good grammar whenever you write is important. Not only does it make everything you write easier to read, but it will also help you to use grammar successfully when you write something which has to look good.

First things first, this post isn't a dig at anyone and I'll almost certainly have worded it badly and it'll get misinterpreted. I'm interested in gathering opinions. I know some of you have dyslexia as well, so don't take offence. Everyone else: please keep it nice ;)

Onto the thread topic...

Presumably, those of you who can't spell or handle your grammar must know who you are. It's you I'm interested to hear from most :)

When I see a post full of spellink and grammer mistakes it sticks out at me like a sore thumb. I'll occasionally make a typo but it's purely that; it's not because I don't know. If you can't spell, can you see the difference between a well spelled and grammatically correct post and one that isn't? It's interesting that sometimes when you see a badly spelled post, it is written the way that person might speak their post out loud in their regional accent, as if they don't know what the real word is.

I think this has come from the fact that I think I have a fairly neutral accent when I speak. Put me in with people locally and they comment that I speak with a posh accent. Put me in with people who are in fact posh, and they will say I sound common :p

I'm interested to see if it's the same, visually, with written language.

Regional accents, I have one parent from Glasgow and the other Belfast. When I talk I switch between Scotish and N Irish accents, when I write/type the words how they are writen don't always match how they are said. The English Langage in its writen form doesn't match how people talk out side of the English South. How I talk and write does throw me and some times am lazy. Maybe if the English langage was more standardises it would be easyer.

I can get grammar and spelling right if I take my time and think about it. But on a forum with my kids running a muck its not going to happen. Its realy not that important.

I'm really getting sick of these threads and they do make me laugh. For those of you who persistently antagonize someone over their spelling or grammar, have you ever thought of this?

1) Maybe, english isn't their first language.
2) Maybe they are dyslexic
3) Maybe, they have a degree in biomedical engineering and while their grammar isn't as good as the kid who studied Shakespeare or philosophy, they are probably a lot brighter then him.

If you really must take 2 minutes of your time simply to point out that Johnny was incapapable of using one apostrophe correctly, then you sir are very pompous and pedantic. In other words: an arse.

English!

I dare you all to go a whole week without using spell checker when posting here, then backtrack and spot the mistakes :p

I'd be writing "teh" all over the shop, even though I'm not a shop.

The forum rules should state that reading http://theoatmeal.com/ is mandatory as well, this would improve things further!

Barring the first one it's really not that hard, there are plenty of people with diagnosed dyslexia on the forums that you would never tell because they take time and care with their posts.

For the third one it's surely laziness, it's not hard to learn... Before maybe 2 or 3 years ago I was misusing 'it's' and 'its', but then I learned how to use them correctly.
