Anyone got or used the new Blackberry Torch?

Had one since Tuesday, had a Bold 9700 before and loved it.

Hated both the storms, so was apprehensive on this, but since work is buying :p

Love it! better than the Bold, way better than the Storm as it has a proper touch screen. The screen isnt as good as the iphones, but it does the job nicely, battery life whilst being used a fair bit is 2 days, so not too bad.
Mind you the 9700 had a battery twice the size, and used to last 4 days easily, whilst being used a lot at work.

OS6 is much more slick, and easy to use, but still has the classic BB feel.

Get one, they are one of the best Blackberrys so far.

More or less how i feel about mine...its just awesome with OS6 on it...it has its little bugs but they arent deal breakers ie if i put text messages into my favourite folder...it seems to disappear after some time but i have enough confidence in RIM to fix that little issue when they release another OS update.

Cant put it down, just awesome and the size is so similar to my old 9000 Bold, nice and wide which i missed when i replaced my 9000 with the 9700 last yr.

AS much as i love the 9700, its now going up for sale when i get a free moment to put it up for sale....the 9800 is just so damn slick and easy to use.

I picked mine up day before last. My thoughts:

The phone itself is great to look at, the screen is just the right size and the keyboard even with my sausage fingers is easy to type on.

OS6 is a great improvement on previous RIM O/Systems, it's fluid, easy to use and nice to look at. Voice dialing I don't know if anyone has noticed has greatly improved also and was my main reason for coming back to BB... nothing worse than driving to a 999 and having to stop and dial the phone :(

I've come from a HTC Hero and Android (And paid Orange £150 to come off early) and I find it a fair bit better than the Andoid I was using.

I'm having a few issues with Vodafone as I can't seem to get 3G coverage atm, something I intend to ring them about tomorrow.

Other than that I really have no complaints, it's a great phone (Inc. the Camera which often lets BB down imo - much improved.)

Thanks for your feedback, I got this phone through shortly after my post this morning although I haven't got around to opening it yet. Truth be told I was looking at the android phones until the retentions guy suggested this one, I haven't tried blackberry before so I'm wary.

I'm coming across from a HTC Touch HD, so I reckon the performance should be greater than Windows mobile at least :)

The price they offered is what caught me, when compared to everywhere else anyway. 24 month contract (:/) free phone, 20 quid a month, including the mobile internet, and additional 500meg mobile broadband (worth another 5 quid a month) for some reason. Seems like a good deal, although I imagine its full of branding/network lock which is a resale turn-off I guess.

Still, I'll give it a go :D

£20 A MONTH!!!! That's amazing, presuming that's on Vodafone?

It is with Orange. Also I meant they also sent me a usb dongle which is apparently included in my contract price and it's usage is on a separate fup to my phone.

I cannot see any physical branding, but the firmware has it written in - maybe a upgrade will bypass this?

It does feel like a great deal, and the phone runs so smoothly compared to my old windows mobile. Although I have been spoilt by a higher resolution phone so this is going to take some getting used to, that could be the deal breaker for me. Could always give it to the Mother I suppose :)

Is OS6 the main reason it tops the 9700? Not fond of the slider if I'm honest, much prefer the bar types..

Well that and the upgraded camera plus the luxury of having both touch screen and a hardware keyboard. Honestly im not a fan of sliders myself but the 9800 is built extremely well, pretty solid device in all honesty and it reminds me of my 9000 Bold which was a wide-ish device...the 9800 is pretty wide as well.

Only way you can get rid of the branding is by de-branding but unlike nokie or SE its a process that uses illegal software and could very well brick the phone if you dont know what your doing.

One of the reasons why i always buy my phones sim free/unlocked.

I'm getting bored of this waiting for the 9780 to released. If there was an official word on it atleast I'd know of a date to be waiting for but there's nothing! Lots of speculation still flying about about it coming out on twenty-first of this month. If it doesn't then I'm just going for the 9700. There's also people saying that as the 9800 hasn't sold as well as it should have and there's still a lot left in stock BB may decide to delay the 9780 as it will only take-away from the sales.

Tempted to upgrade to this on vodafone, can get the phone free on a £35 a month 24 month contract Im currently using a HTC Magic, how easy is it to sync contacts email via my gmail account to the blackberry?

Pretty easy actually...I use google synch to synch my contacts over the air or you could just use the in built synch option in the blackberry email setup screen on the blackberry.

A workmate bought the Torch last week, I was tempted to write a thread about it as I wrote up a fairly beefy comparison between it and my Desire and also iPhone (3GS). I've also use the Palm Pre which another workmate had.

My thoughts were that it's a fine direction for Blackberry, certainly is nice to use and the screen is responsive.

The OS is also featurepacked from what I could gather but there are issues of transitions and animations feeling a bit jumpy (photo gallery for example).

The app market is still new so no idea on how that will pan out but if you're a BB user then you'll probably like the change but users of an iPhone or Android 2.2 device won't be wowed especially those with Androids running custom ROMs.

I'd have to use one for a few days to be able to compare to that kind of level but I think it's safe to say that the winner would be Android out of any smartphone platform at present :p

Some helpful reviews and feedback and nice to I am not the only one interested in the phone :)
Still tempted but think I want to see the Desire HD and the new Windows Phone devices first now having read and seen videos of them.
Although not a major multimedia user on my phone I really would like HD recording. I used my Storm quite a bit despite the dubious quality so would love a better version for my new phone.

Possibly but then you have iphone and BB users who say their devices are the best...vicious circle:p.

Personally my feeling is just get one that ticks all your boxes...for my day to day work related stuff my BB is the best out there...for my multimedia stuff the iphone4 that i have is the best bar none.

Ive had a couple of Android handsets ie the Magic and Desire and felt they werent right for me so sold them whereas my BB has always been the device i rely on.

If i was in your position id wait and have a play around with all 3 and see which one fits your needs. Of course im biased when it comes to BB's, im BB through and through but then the BB fits my needs perfectly when it comes to the more serious stuff ie emails, texts and calls. Much like the iphone4 fits my needs when it comes to multimedia stuff ie games, videos and mp3s. Thats not to say that Android and apple dont do the serious stuff well.

But the more i use my Torch the more i fall in love with it...for me it works perfectly well...it does have its niggles but then Android and other devices have niggles too...so no one device is perfect.

HD recording isnt available on BB's yet...maybe with the newer batch of phones they will add it in but at the moment no BB's have hd recording...again for me thats not a big deal as i have an iphone4 with hd recording and i also have a HD camcorder too.

Another good thing I have noticed with the Torch or OS6 is that when you are on the mobile network and Wifi, the old devices usually stayed with the slower mobile network for ages, whereas the Torch pretty much uses it for Facebook, browsing straight away.

Loving it so far :)
