Mondeo ST vs Focus ST - Why such a price difference?

I don't get it, you guys are saying that they both have around the same performance but the Mondeo is much better kitted out and more spacious however the Focus is worth more as its more tunable and has a sportier image? Now I don't doubt that the are people out there who will sacrifice comfort and features for a sportier image and the ability to tune the car but are the really enough of them to swing the market value like that?

Of course. Different people have different sets of priorities. Why does this come as a surprise?

The UK has some of the lowest used car prices in the world, especially for any car larger than a Focus. A Mondeo is criminally cheap here because most people are idiots and think they cost fortunes to run, are "too big" for them and the road tax is 78p more per millennium blah blah blah.

People in the UK have some kind of irrational pride/desire to have a new but otherwise small and not very good car, and this is reflected in the used car prices.

Well, because I wouldn't have expected "cool image and easy to mod" to be a more popular set of priorities among the general populous than "safe, comfortable, spacious and very well kitted out" the average car owner is not an extra from the fast and the furious and so I found it surprising that the were enough tuners out there to swing the supply and demand to make the Focus worth more.

The Focus attracts a more 'boy racer type' owner who, being a 'boy racer type' always wants his car to go faster. With the Focus being easy to mod and has a more 'boy racer' image than the old man Mondeo, this is what i'll assume jacks up the price of the Focus over the Mondeo.

Sorry but I think the price of the Focus ST relative to the Mondeo ST is barely, if at all, influenced by the engine's ability to be tuned. The cars are just not rare enough or 'enthusiast' enough for it to have an effect.

I don't think the Focus ST is really 'boy racer' at all. Most enthusiasts that would like to own a Focus ST will have it remapped as the gains are awesome for such little money.

Locally, I can't think of any boy racers I've seen driving a Focus ST, in fact, most people I see driving STs are 30+.

I'd say the Focus appeals more to the driving enthusiast, where the Mondeo appeals more to those who want a fairly sensible car that is just a bit more special.
