LOTRO now free to play!

Speaking as someone who was a member of Turbines preview server isengard it all changed prior to Turbine was taken over by Warner Brother's and we all struggled to get into the Seige of Mirkwood Beta. Our roles were to test content, provide feedback and make suggestions with bug reports. It slowly changed that the billing system which was once manual is now automatic i.e they used to set us up with accounts that had no money to pay.

Since then it is now USA only and EU has never had a test server. Tbh sometimes this is a bit of an advantage since Turbine sometimes releases content to their server's to have a wave of bugs that need resolving.

If you do check the Codie's forums more info is around that indicate they are close to providing the info we all want.

Yep the OCUK kin is on Laurelin too

Whats the OCUK kin called? I don't play on Laurelin but I have a low level character I rolled there just to check out how role playing in the Prancing Pony was. Never really got into the RP side of things though and my character was abandoned drinking beer beside Barliman :)

Not entirely sure, I'm on laurelin because of the community but I'm not in the ocuk guild, but I think its called something of the undying kings , if you search ingame on undying king it should show up on the search though

Just been wrestling with the uniquely awful cog website and it seems I have somehow put up with it long enough to get the trial activated.

Havent actually logged in yet though, so the pc might have a new home...on its side outside my window.

am i wasting my time downloading it, is it really free to play in UK.

bah might start playing EQ2 or WOW

It's not free in the eu yet, should be soon though. Nobody publicly knows what the issue is that's holding it up so pay no heed to comments made about either turbine or codemasters.

Having said that, in your case I would say it isn't worth you in particular downloading it as you appeared to have already decided it was too much like wow and in my experience whenever anyone carries a preconception into a game they generally subconsciously fulfill their preconceptions. If I was you I would download wow. If I was me , I'd download lotro. :)

So did anybody sign up to the f2p preview and play it?

I really enjoyed it, maybe because they allowed you to jump up to lvl65 in 5min :D , I played a Warden and a Rune Keeper, Warden is great, might have to start me one of these!

PVP was fun! Looking forward to doing that again.

Starting areas have changed a bit which gives the game a nice start, especially to the new people who have never played LOTRO.

Nice to see directx 11 been added, didn’t make a huge difference, but water buildings and a few others things, looking really, sharp and crisp!

LOTRO Store was very easy to use and upgrading was very quick and instant. Even though they didn’t have everything activated.

What I would have liked to have seen is a upgrade to the Auction House and a dungeon tool similar to Warcraft. Even a tool to get a fellowships together.
Once you reach lvl 40 there are so many more fellowship quests you have to do and trying to get one together is a nightmare. Unless you in a good Kinship and you have higher levels helping you out.

Tomstone – any news from your mate about the reason for the delay and any news on a launch date? I did read today that the 3 day stress test was a huge success and they have done the testing they needed to do and we should launch very soon.

Any other thoughts?

Come to think of it , I havent bothered to ask him about the delay, ever since the reason was "sort of" explained, I just let it drop.

I'll have to inquire again and see if he is now able to say what it was, wont see him til the pub this weekend so I'll have to ask him about the launch over a pint :)

Why not?

Its the worst thing about Lotro, especially in levels 30-50 its damn hard to find groups, you either have to spam (global)lff or have random luck in other people doing it instead, and I bet there are quite a few players who don't use the global channels and those which don't group at all because of the hassle.

Usually once im reaching the tale end of an area 3/4 of the quests I've got going on are group stuff that I've not been able to find a group for. The whole time I did the northdowns, I only managed to have one session of group play and we decided just to crunch through as many group quests as we could, as we knew it was a rare thing to have a full group.

A group finder would really help out, just leave it on while doing other stuff and no need to worry about scouring the chat constantly.

Exactly why not??? it would just make the group quests so much easier. Turbine have given us so many groups to do, but have not made it any easier to help us achieve these.

I was spamming LFF loads last night, to do a number of group quests in Angmar, nothing at all, a fellow Kinship member helped me out in the end! Now that I come to think of it, it would be even great for Skirmishes, again it is so hard to find fellowships to do the harder ones(tier 3 etc)

My days of playing Wow are sort of over(I might have a little stab at Cat :p) but when they introduced the “looking for group” tool for Instances it was a very good update and the best they done for ages!

As Mahnsikir said, you can carry on doing stuff and not worry about spamming the chat groups.

This is where the increased emphasis on being able to solo in MMOs is really quite detrimental imo to the genre. If they make much more of LOTRO soloable you'd frankly not need to group at all.

My last character grouped twice, just twice before reaching Moria, and only 4 times before reaching level 60. Virtually soloed on him , at a good pace too, from 1-50. More needs to be done in MMOs imo to encourage grouping, more stuff like the Group XP bonus that you used to get in Daoc for simply being in a group. The more they make things soloable in MMOs, the less people will group because they dont need to and the harder it will become to find groups.

I like that idea, "group quest xp"

yes agree, do away with the group quests and make it all solo! I'm 3 lvls from Moria and I will just stick with the Epic quest line and the solo quests too.

I tried to log in last night, but am really confused by the account process.

I installed the game, using the activation code in the box (not the 7 day trial).

When I add the game to my COG profile, it won't accept the activation key. Do I need to set up a payment method even if I only plan to use the 30 days that come with the retail pack?

Probably, that's the way it always works with subscription games. You won't get charged until the end of the 30 days anyway, and the game will almost certainly have gone f2p by then.

There should be a clear delineation made here here between simply levelling, and playing the game.

Yes, it is much more easy to get capped these days, however, simply soloing it will mean you miss out on some great content. I often wonder how much of the game people who cry out for more 65 content have actually played. I dare say it would quite a lot, but there are certainly those who have charged through the levels without ever bothering to stop and look around once in a while.

(btw, I realise we are arguing the same point. Just using you as a quote :) )
