girlfriend's car - write off?

Car is only worth about £800.
New parts will cost more than that. Nissan wanted £115 3 years ago for a new headlight on my micra!

I bet you could fix it from a scrappy for a few hundred, but it depends what damage has been done under the bonnet.

Well most consider a car write off if it costs more to repair than the car is worth.

If you have the ability to do all the work yourself, might be able to do it for less than the value of the car. But to get that damage fixed at a garage will be more than the car is worth.

Could be any amount of damage under the external bent metal though, which could cost a large amount to fix, makes it cheaper and easier to just get rid and get another.

i dont know how to fix cars :p

the car is gone already anyway. insurance made arrangement with local auto repair garage for assess

It's possible she has a really low excess, then why not? Her insurance isn't going to go up more than £700 is it.

In fact when my mate claimed for his £1200 rover, his insurance still went down the next year (albeit not as much as it might have, but still it cost him less to claim for sure)

It's always you, isnt it...

She probably wont have a 50 quid excess. It's probably at least £250, as much as £400 if she's a younger driver. Claiming for a total loss on the vehicle also ends the policy with no pro rata refund - so if she's 6 months in she throws 6 months insurance down the toilet as well, at whatever value that is. She also loses 2 years NCB unless she has it protected, and suffers a premium loading for between 3 and 5 years depending on insurers.

Any more questions?

It may be a write off but hopefully wont be fingers crossed bud.

Funny I was thinking the same when I seen your post and done a nice roll eyes to myself. Maybe she does have a low excess and lots of protected no claims bonus. But then hey how dare she then claim on her insurance, who does she think she is someone entitled to use it for its purpose.

You always got to be the one questioning everything...

I suspect like most people she doesn't realise the implications of doing so.

I do love the way you deleted my perfectly reasonable, rational explanation of why its not always a good idea to claim from your quote, though. Why did you do that? Is it because you've only really got the capacity to have ago at the way I say things rather than the actual content I post?

We cant all post wonderfully useful and insightful things like 'maybe it will be hopefully it wont be', after all.

The only potential issue in this is what she drove into. If she drove into a third party who is making a claim against her insurance then she may as well, but if there is no third party claim she would probably be better off simply buying a new car on her existing policy.

Fully Comp on a car worth £700 just seems like pouring money down the drain anyway. I know TPFT isn't that much cheaper, especially for young drivers, but when you add the cost of a claim (i.e. excess, loss of NC and claims history) it is surely never worth claiming in these cases.

But even if she does have 100 quid excess, the loading for years to come, plus the ending of her policy is surely going to come to 700 quid no?

I know MikeHiow probably has 20 years experience in the insurance business as well as being a racing driver and a mechanic for a Formula 1 team but I also don't see the point in claiming if the car is worth £700.
