My Golf - Update thread

I have found memorys of my uncles gti 8v. Handled very well but could have been rose tinted glasses. Would love a ride in a sorted one. Cant wait to hear this when its completed, chuck some vids up!

I decided to start the removal of the current engine today. Only put in a couple of hours before going to work this afternoon, but it's a start.

The way the Mk2 Golf is put together makes it a simple job to remove pretty much the whole front end. This isn't strictly necessary when removing the engine, but it makes things much easier to work on by giving loads of access to the engine bay. It's simply a case of unbolting a few (!) bolts and stripping it apart, so here's one MK2 Golf looking rather sorry for itself:

Front end in a big pile of bits in my garage:

Also removed the fuel distributor and airbox:

Which left me a nice space for the catch-can and R1 fuel pump to go:

:)

Bit of an update, after weeks of doing **** all, I got my finger out and removed the old engine, so here's the obligatory 'standing in the engine bay' shot (not sure why I'm grinning like a pedo in this pic :/ ) :

Removed the gearbox:

I was going to use the clutch that came with the donor engine as it had a fair old bit of meat left, but as it turns out it has a different sized spline so wouldn't fit my gearbox. I didn't want to re-use my old clutch as it was pretty well worn so I ordered and fitted a brand-new (and mildly uprated) LUK clutch kit. I installed the new clutch kit, attached the gearbox, and installed the new engine:

As you can see in that last pic I also mounted the catch tank and fuel pump (on the left of that shot).

Still to do:

- Finish plumbing in fuel pump and breathers
- Swap drive gear from donor engine's dizzy onto my old engine's vac-advance dizzy so I can use it on the new engine
- Drill carb jets out to 1.65mm

Then it's just a case of bolting all the ancillaries up, bolting the driveshafts up, connect the wiring, then re-attach the front end. Then it'll be the big moment of truth :D

This is going to guzzle fuel surely? :p

What if the jetting resize goes wrong? Do they not sell jets pre-sized to your spec? :)

Yeah it'll probably drink a fair bit but meh, it's just a toy and I hardly do big miles in it. I think Bogg Bros sell pre-drilled jets but for the price of a precision drill bit I thought I'd give it a go. If it does go pear-shaped I probably will buy some pre-sized jets.

A little more progress. I've bolted the carbs up properly now (I had just temporarily put them on in the previous pics), done the fuel lines, breather hoses, throttle cable, and most of the wiring is back in place.

Carbs in place with fuel lines and stainless-braided breather hoses plumbed in:

Fuel pump with fuel lines connected:

Fuel supply to the fuel pump (fuel feed and return connected to T-Piece which in turn feeds the fuel pump):

How it's looking at the moment:

I also decided against drilling and bought some pre-sized jets, they are only a couple of quid so I've bought three sets: 165, 170 and 175s.

Not a huge amount to do now, next big-ish problem is making a bracket to fit the alternator and sourcing a belt of the correct length.

That looks ******* awesome! Is that an 8v GTi engine?

This may be a silly question but what happens in regards to air filtering when you put the carbs on? Do they not just suck any old crap into the engine?

PS while your in there you don't reckon you could take a pic showing where the sender for the rev counter is please (if its the same place as the 16v)? my rev counter is busted :( and the haynes manual is not help :O

Mk3 8v 2.0 bottom end (2E), with a Mk4 crossflow head.

I'll probably be putting filter socks over the trumpets.

Not sure if it's the same on the 16v, but I believe on the 8v it's just taken from the coil.

not bad, me and my mate are currently fitting a 1.8T too his mkII, 180bhp should be silly fast.

Sweet, that's an awesome conversion but it would have went against my 'fun on a budget' ethos that I'm trying to stick to with this car.

That should make a nice noise for sure :D Are you going to fit any form of filter or leave them open? Handy that they're at the front of the car for a cold air feed, but you might have to watch out for heat soak from the radiator.

edit... Ignore my question about filtering, just seen your post above.

Good work so far.

cool i'll have a look for the coil in the haynes manual lol! Its annoying the crap out of me not having the rev counter.

You a member of any VW clubs in the SW DreXel???

You going to run a straight through exhaust with this? Would sound epic with a hot cam and open stacks.

Don't tempt me :D

For now I'll still be using what's already on the car, a Remus system.

I've been to the odd meet but in all honesty I find the whole VW scene a bit, erm, 'sceney'. I find some of the bizarre fashions that people seem to blindly follow a bit cringeworthy at times.
