One of life's many mysteries?

I've never heard anyone except the sort of person who finds only racist jokes funny call their local Chinese takeaway "chinkie".

We call it the Chinese, or if we're feeling posh, Oriental.

This thread is ridiculous.

Look, here in the UK the term "Chinky" has two recognised meanings - depending on the context and intent of the user!

Firstly there is the known and recognised slang term used to describe a restaurant or meal of Chinese origin - which the OP clearly intended to convey in his first post.

Secondly there is the recognised derogatory term used to refer to Chinese people themselves - which several people in this thread have wrongly taken the OPs intent and context to refer to.

The OP has already made it clear he meant no offence and frankly if that's not good enough for some of you I suggest you turn off your pc and go hide under the duvet - there is a big scary world out there and frankly you're too weak and pathetic to take part!

Some what slightly off topic went to get a chinkies one night after a few beers and was waiting in line. Some bloke came in completely bladdered, walks up to the counter and stretches his eyes you know what I mean. Then in a stupid chineese accent goes "chivken chow mein please"

the guy (a chineese bloke) behind the counter looked at him for a few secs then spread his eyes the other way then in then goes "**** off you're barred" in the worlds broadest Geordie accent :D :D :D :D

I was in pain laughing that much :D

Man, I would have given all the hair on my happy sack to have seen that :D

Of course we should take your word since you have the longest post - so you must be right! Irrelevant of everyone else's experience which is subordinate to yours!

AGHHHHHHHHH IT'S SO TRIVIAL

Isn't it funny how if this thread contained the word n***** or p*** in every other post that it would be censored or closed entirely, suspensions and bans all over the place. I was tempted to not star them out, but you know what? I didn't want to offend someone. If someone of those origins reads them, they may be offended, hurt and annoyed that someone couldn't give a **** about what they say and who it may offend.

So some small minded ignorant people use it to describe having a Chinese takeaway? Oh, then that makes it perfectly fine then...

Didn't mean anything racist by it? What a classic line. Just because you say that doesn't mean your not hurting someone. It's like saying "I'm not racist but...". It doesn't suddenly give you a free pass to say whatever you like.

So should you have to think about if you'll be hurting anyone by saying things like this? Not at all, continue to live your lives like this if you wish. I'm guessing that most of you won't actually spend some time thinking about what I've said and presume I'm an over-sensitive, PC hippy. Your of course entitled to think that. However I'm entitled to think that your an absolute **** :).

Jesus H Delilah, most of Northern Ireland must be racist bastids, certainly, everyone I know (obviously not most of NI) calls it a chinkie with no racial undertones.
A meal of chinese origin, nothing racist about it.
Does that mean I cant go for a chinkie but can call an oriental person a chinese b££$$£rd? Not that I would, they are all fantastic cooks, Im not going to burn my bridges for the sake of a decent sweet and sour.

It's PC gone mad I tell ya.

For what its worth, we all call it the Chinky around here too and we can't be racist because we live in the Black Country.

The meal is a chinkies, the people who make it are (probably anyway) chinese. How is it racist? Its shorthand, and nothing more.

I don't really like the term but i don't see it as racist either.

However, saying it is short hand is just crap. Saying Chinese is as easy saying chinky. You are not saying any less syllables. It is totally different than saying Pakistani to ****.

You don't care though, do you.

Not really, but when asked why, saying it is short hand is utter BS.

Though, one time, when I wasn't in a good mood, while helping my dad in his takeaway, someone called up (teenagers) and asked "can we order a chinky?". I answered with "you can order a Chinese."

He hung up on me. Lol
