He did it for free as it was An emergency callout, he shouldn't really have repaired it, just made it safe. We gave him a bottle of Champers from our wine store

Look on the bright side - people who break stuff while doing DIY provide a significant amount of work for various artisans, thus helping the economy. So you were helping the economy with your jigsaw. Good man!

It'd only ignite if it were exposed to a source of ignition. I don't think jigsaw blades generate enough heat to combust gas.

Don't really know. I had to run outside to shut the gas off .

Copper pipes. Jigsaws would create sparks, but obviously not enough. Fortunately!

Very lucky escape, swift action on your part once you realised youd dropped a clanger probally saved you from a much worse situation.

Explosive range for methane is around 5-15% so depending on the size of the room you'd have an explosive mixture pretty quickly from a ruptured pipe.

When younger I remember daddy putting two large nails through one of our water pipe, TWO!

It was pretty hilarious when he lifted the board up and it started going everywhere.

I was cutting through a floorboard at the same time (indeed, that was the initial plan not the gas pipe), and so didn't really notice. Luckily the other halfs father was working on the fuse box, and saw the gas pipe vibrating like mad so shouted at me to stop.

Thing is, the pipe bends in the middle, so it's a really badly laid pipe. I'll draw an epic picture to demonstrate. I thought I'd be safe cutting, as the pipe should have been laid straight, so we'd know where it was, but nooooo:
