How can people have bad holidays these days?

My Sister In Law has just got back from 2 weeks in Corfu and said it was awful.
OK, you can't do much about the weather and they said it rained every day but at least you can do something about the accommodation.
For at least 10 years it has been virtually impossible to go somewhere without being able to read up on it first.
You pick your way through other travelers comments and come to a conclusion whether you think it's going to be OK or not.
I'm always shocked at the gimps on Holidays From Hell and Watchdog who complain because I can see all the information and bad reviews.
Some people just like to throw money away without any effort.

Rant over.

Allocation on demand?
Change of staffing?
The holidaymaker themselves?

Pleny of things can happen that research won't cover.

You can’t tell what a holiday is like by reading the crap written by other people on the internet. Sucker beware but of course there are things that you can’t plan for even if it seems like a good place.

Stupid rant is stupid. ;)

You can tell what a hotel is like quite easily.

Tbh tripadvisor used to be a great resource but lately it's full of crap. Whilst researching my recent Cyprus holiday someone wrote on their that they didn't like the hotels food so wouldn't be returning to Cyprus.

It's basically a fact that "people" are generally idiots and complain about ridiculous things. This makes weening out the good with bad reviews, from the actual bad places difficult. You should be able to avoid atrocities though.

I recently had cause to stay at a hotel in Skipton on business. Reviews of the hotel online said it was nice, and the photos looked fine.

We arrived to find that, while well appointed, it had paper thin walls (my colleague in the room next to me and myself could hear the couple above us at it for most of the first night).

There was no overnight staff, not even a night porter (not sure if that's even legal) and they shut the boiler off so there was no hot water when we woke up in the morning for a shower.

And the restaurant, while very tasty and well presented, seemed incapable of getting an order right.

Reviews can't tell you everything.

My point exactly.
I've never had a bad holiday because I picked through the reviews.

but the skill with tripadvisor is pick through the dross and find the ones that are complaining about legitimate things.

its a bit hard to argue about building works for example. theres nothing subjective about that. Check the reviews first, then walk away when you read something like that

We've used tripadvisor for every hotel we've ben to together, not picked a bad one yet, except for the one i went on with my parents, which they picked ... with the help of the travel agent ...

Because plenty of people believe what the travel agents tell them

/thread.

They shouldn't have to be suspicious of people who deal with hotel companies etc for a living.

I booked a holiday earlier this year and was recommended an airport hotel who provided onsite parking by the travel agent (I'd researched others in the area but not this). I looked it up when I got home and found nothing but negative reviews, including a lot of comments about cars being broken into. I went straight to the travel agent and changed hotels but I can understand people trusting a recommendation.

Around 1999 we thought we had buggered up with a holiday.
We'd read through peoples comments and decided to book it in Tenerife.
About 1 month before we went, there was a Holiday From Hell special dedicated to this one complex and we were worried.
After the 30 minute programme my daughters asked if we could change the holiday and then I picked through all the complaints -

1) Somebody moaning about cats on the complex
2) Somebody moaning about being broken into and having stuff nicked off their bed when there was a safe in the wardrobe
3) Somebody moaning about kids making a noise around the outside pool table (next to the club)
4) Somebody moaning about all the steps and hill which is mentioned in the brochure
5) Somebody moaning about the steep walkway that goes down to the pool (which was in the brochure)
6) Somebody moaning about a neighbour playing music until 2 in the morning (expected)

Anyway, we had a great holiday with no complaints.

People are stupid.

Just read through tripadvisor and form your own opinion. The key is reading carefully and figuring out who's moaning for no reason whatsoever.

Tripadvisor et al are often more trouble than they are worth. I used it a lot for my America trip and was initially put off loads of places by the comments.

It quickly became apparent that the majority of people who write reviews on trip advisors are halfwits who make everything seem far worse than it is - rating a hotel 1 star because they forgot a towel one day, etc etc.

Indeed, it nots just the people making the comments its the people reading them as well. You need to be able to take in all the information and make an informed decision, not just omg 1 star ftl etc.

You see people complaining about all sorts which for one man may be a poison but for another ideal. (e.g. kids facilities, location/amenities etc)

What I thought at the time was the biggest gamble I ever made was booking a Grand Canyon flight. The company I went with in the end had over 60% negative reviews. Most of them were moans about everything from the weather to the time they waited at the airport to the flight to the other people on the tour etc. Many claimed the trip 'TOTALLY RUINED MY HOLIDAY'. But there seemed little choice, so I reluctantly went ahead with it.

And received probably the smoothest, best organised and most excellent tour run by the most polite staff I could ever have wished for.
