I think it was through a combination of social policies and great people and having a golden age already started.

You're playing as Persian (golden ages last twice as long), so an uber golden age is really easy
Building the Taj Mahal wonder as Persian will instantly give you a 52 turn golden age. I think there's also an earlier wonder that gives +50% to golden ages too, so Persians can get an instant 78 turn golden age that can be made to last to the end of the game if you can make great people quickly enough.
Blady'el. Why 52?

niceSid Meier's Civilization 5 is set to expand later this month with two new downloadable packs. The turn-based strategy game will toss you into a hexagon with Genghis Khan in the "Mongols Civilization and Scenario Pack," which sees you unfurling his Asian empire across the globe. The pack is due on October 25th and comes, according to 2K Games, as a free "gift to the legions of Civ fanatics." (Don't mess with them, they're really well organized.)

Anyone got any tips to improve performance. I'm running an i5-750, GTX280 and 4GB Ram. Resolution is 1650x1080 and most of the video options are set to medium. It starts out okay but gets really sluggish and slow towards end game. I'm only playing a standard map with 6 civs and 12 city states. I suppose I could always overclock my processor but thats a last resort for me

Ive played it enough now to frankly get bored of it.
Come Riflemen and cannons - My game nealry always degrades into the beginning of a world war which entails me moving countless units of riflemen across most of the know world to crush 2+ war liek lunatic neighbours.
IT can literally take 5 minutes per turn with 2 minute calculations. and I get bored... shame tho. Will come back to it each patch or xpac.
Have to agree with this - not sure about anyone else but it's practically impossible to win without killing everyone in sight - unless you beat them down to one city and then it's just dull. The AI is very aggressive.
Why not build enough military to hold them at bay and just plod along for a science victory or whatever? Just because you have troops doesn't mean you have to actively go after enemies.
